Destination Wedding!

Lianie, on February 28, 2022 at 9:14 PM Posted in Planning 2 7
Hi everyone! So I’m getting married in Cancun Mexico, and I wanted to know if anyone had any advice or tips regarding destination weddings or if you had your wedding in Mexico. I’m very nervous but excited for this journey.

Best wishes with your engagement! I don't have destination wedding tips, but I actually just returned from my Cancun honeymoon, and the weather is glorious-- not too hot and sweaty. It's def romantic and good for couples, even though it has a reputation as a party town or family holiday destination. You can certainly find an all-inclusive, all-adult, smaller, larger resort or private villa for your needs. We adored the Ritz Carlton, Cancun (American company). The service is 5star, 5 diamond impeccable, not too large, and the beach is steps away from the pool. Made me wish I got married there-- I would have no worries. Hotels should also have conference ballrooms, too, if you prefer indoors. We also walked down the shore and saw the beginnings of a beach wedding at the Hard Rock. I would plan around February school break and college kids spring break. I think your choice of March 2023 would be great.

I just had a destination vow renewal in Orlando Universal/Disney, not quite another country, but still had to fly. It was the best decision we ever made. There is something so exciting about leaving your zip code and making memories in new places. Having said that, here is my advice:

1-If you want hair and makeup done, research, research, research and book a vendor that comes highly recommended. I would also recommend a trial before the wedding. If it is a friend or family member, still do a trial before the wedding and wear it for a day to see how it holds up in tropical weather/wind.

2-Photography-Pictures are too important to trust to just anybody, so either hire a traveling photographer whose work you vetted ahead of time, or again, research a local photographer. Sometimes hotels/cruise ships offer photography, but in my experience and after hearing enough horror stories from brides who hated their pictures-this is one I would not leave to chance. Also talk to your photographer about the time of day for the best lighting for your photos.

3-Do not feel guilty when people cannot attend because of the cost, kids, whatever. I invited my very good friends, and only one was able to come due to the cost. It is what it is. I know a lot of people say that if someone really wants to be there they will make it. That is true to a point. If you don't have the money, you don't have the money.

4-Pack way ahead of time and decide how you will transport any wedding items you are taking. You may need additional or different pieces of luggage to accommodate clothing and other items.

5-Don't forget to arrange steaming for your dress for you and your spouse's attire!

6-Be very careful in the sun in the days leading up to your event. Wear lots of sunscreen and stay in the shade. Sunburn, tan lines or even a tan that changes your makeup significantly can be a headache.

7-Last but not least, find a way to let your guests know important information that does not require they call you every five minutes. And plan for travel documents like passports well in advance.

Good luck, let me know if you have any more questions!

If you go under the Ideas tab, you can find Real Weddings specific to Cancun for dreamy pics, venue, and vendor ideas. Smiley laugh

Yay! I'm doing a destination wedding in Cancun as well this December Smiley smile I think the biggest detail in planning so far has been understanding your package and what's included, not included and dealing with the guest travel.
