Diabetic Brides?

Krs1300, on February 15, 2010 at 2:09 PM Posted in Planning 0 15

So... I was on cloud 9 last May. I graduated from college, got engaged on my birthday in Puerto Rico while on an AMAZING cruise vacation... then 3 weeks later, I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. My life changed SO MUCH in such a short period of time... both for the good and the bad. I now inject myself with insulin about 5 times everyday. Though I'm used to it (as used to it as I think I'll ever be...), it is a tremendous added stress on the wedding planning. Is anyone else in the same boat? I find myself worrying about if my sugar will go low while I'm at the alter during my hour long Catholic ceremony! How embarassing would that be!!

Right away I want to give you medical advice but I can't and won't. I'm sure you're inundated already anyway. I'm not diabetic but please take care of yourself. Stress can effect your blood sugar and monitor your A1C levels. Make a plan for you wedding day and educate your FH and a family member(s) for a 'just in case' event.

I am not diabetic but my father has type 1 diabetes. Last year he switched from the shots to a pump. He programs the amount of carbs he eats then programs the pump so it know how much insulin to inject. Whether you are giving yourself shots or using a pump, I highly recommend you test your blood sugar right before you walk down the aisle. Maybe have your MOH carry some sugar pills with her just incase.

If you're having a catholic mass you could have someone switch a sugar tab in for your wafer and use grape juice so you can have a bigger drink.

Kshively- that's not exactly an option. As Catholics, we truly believe the bread and wine is the body and blood. I can't just "substitute" them for different things. Plus, the wine is in a community cup...

Of course I planned to... I'm not really concerned it will ACTUALLY happen... I'm just saying, it would be REALLY embarassing if it did! I'd end up on one of those wedding blooper shows.

I was just trying to see if there were any other ladies on WW who were in the same situation as me...

Krs, make sure you give your priest a heads up! Maybe you could have your MOH hang onto a piece of hard candy just in case. I've given myself injections for rheumatoid arthritis since high school, and while it never feels "normal," you'll get used to it. Just be sure to communicate very clearly with your bridal party, parents, and anyone else who can/will be helping so that everyoen is on the same page and can help out...no need to overwhelm yourself with last-minute stresses!

Yeah i kno what you mean i've been diabetic since i was 11 and i can tell you it's not fun at all.. the fh got to see first hand a few months ago .. use to i could feel it when it dropped but now .... not till it's too late .. i was sleeping the night he caught it ... he said i jus kept sreaming at him i don't remember any of it till he was dragging me out of the bed he said he kept trying to make me ddrink some juice said he got me to drink some of it but then i got really bad so he thought that if he got me up and to focus on him he might could get me to eat... but i had hoped that he would never have to do that i feel like he's always having to baby sit me hes always calling after he gets to work to make sure i've eat .. he acts like he's scared to leave me alone. but they got like liquid gluecose inlike a little tube like thing .. it fast acting and you could even get the groom to put it in his pocket but keep in mind drinking can work the opposite one some people

I am/used to be Type II. It's NOT fun. It's hard, and like you said,..after a while you get used to it..as used to it as you'll ever be. On your wedding day...it's gonna be difficult..i'd have your MOH or maybe your mom (who'll be sitting in the front row??) hold your glucometer/insulin/viles, etc. I'd also chk your sugar literally 5 min b4 you walk down the aisle. If it seems low, suck on a candy or have a sip orange juice before walking down.. if its high, give yourself a shot, or whatever it is you need to do. Since having weight loss surgery i've pretty much become a non-diabetic, which i'm really thankful for. Not only am i healthier and will live longer but i dont have the hassle of checking it and taking a shot, etc. It'll be okay, you'll see Smiley smile Take care..xoxo

If you have extreme highs/lows, have you considered an insulin pump?

I don't have extreme highs or lows... but yes, I have considered a pump. A pump is not for someone who has uncontrolled diabetes, it is rather a different way to manage it. It is merely a convenience tool. In fact, a doctor will NOT switch you to an insulin pump if you do not first have some kind of control of your diabetes on your own.

We've talked about it... I'm fine on shots for now... I think I'll make the switch when its time to make babies. We'll see... I just don't want anything stuck to me ALL THE TIME... seems like more of a hassle than the shots are.

Ive been type 1 for 46 years. I recently went on the pump and lows have almost completely come to a stop. Even when on the shots I have never had a low during long catholic ceremonies. The biggest key is count carbs and make sure you eat after taking your bolus. If you have nerves and not very hungry than I have found that fruit juice, especially grape, 1/4 cup for a 1 carb choice works great. I am getting married in October and found a garter that will hold my pump! Definitely ask your endocrinologist about concerns for your wedding day!

Thanks Maureen! We actually just passed our ten year wedding anniversary. Hard to believe I asked this question a decade ago. I’m happy to report that everything went well at our wedding! 🙂🙂
