Diamond Vs. Moissanite

Ally, on March 25, 2015 at 3:12 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 36

Those who have Moissy rings, how are they? Do they hold up well?

On r/justengaged I see quite a bit of moissanite rings and they're normally well received. Do you think they'll eventually replace diamonds for engagement rings and become the new norm?

Have you seen them side by side?

I have a black diamond (and black diamond eternity wedding band). They tried to get me to get the Moissanite (cheaper than diamonds, obv), but I could see the difference when I looked at them together. I wanted to have a diamond since they are a lot stronger & I would see them shine when light hits them.

    Spoiled, I know LOL

I can also see the difference when they're side by side. I think they're a great option for people who would like to upgrade later without having to get a whole new ring. I'm not against them, but it would not be my preference.

I don't have a Moissanite ring, but a good friend does. She loves how it is super sparkly no matter what, fraction of the cost of a real diamond, is something different and unique, and can't really tell the difference between a diamond and Moissanite. Plus her ring is in great shape and she has been married for a couple years. When I saw her ring I thought it looked beautiful.

I don't have one, but I've only heard great things. They are actually really strong, only a tiny bit less so than diamonds, so I'm sure they hold up well.

I've seen them side by side and I could tell a little difference between them, but I couldn't tell you which was which. Both are beautiful.

Diamonds are a girls best friend. I don't think they will ever be replaced.

It's interesting, there's videos and stuff about De Beers and their successful campaign, how diamonds as engagement rings aren't very old etc etc. I still prefer diamonds, but I have yet to encounter a moissanite in person to actually see the differences first hand.

@alysha, that was one of their best advertisement lines! I say my dog is my best friend, but having something like that that you can pass down to children/grand children and still look just as good as the day you got it... Can't really beat it!

Maybe if the moissanite makers come up with an even better slogan, it would work. Until then, all men will be sequestered into believing so and it will be a never ending cycle. But even still, it won't be popular until all the richies of the world come out and say they only wear moissanite jewelry. Then it will be cool.

I have a moissanite ring and I adore it I requested it as the diamond industry results in greed and death in many countries. Plus the idea that my ring as a diamond would've been well over $18k made me want to vomit. We have a home and family we are building and throwing away that much on a ring most women are afraid to wear to the gym or while swimming seemed silly. My ring sparkles better than my gfs top quality diamond, even without sunlight and is made to be perfect. I couldn't ask for more.

I have earrings; I love them, and i also have an ethical problem with the diamond industry as a whole.

I agree with @Andi, i have a diamond and that's what i wanted, but you can have high quality moissanite rings, and shitty quality diamond rings. I prefer diamond, and don't think they'll ever be replaced.

I probably would've preferred another stone to moissanite, but I didn't need a diamond. The stone in mine is actually his grandmothers e-ring, AND his mom's e-ring, so it could be a toothpick and I'd love it.

I don't know much about Moissanite but, diamonds aren't going anywhere, all because of great marketing. I do think that non-diamond engagement rings are getting more popular because of the ethical problems surrounding the diamond industry. However, ads for human rights aren't as sexy as diamond ads so...

I think diamonds are beautiful but if we hadn't been given an heirloom diamond I would have wanted a sapphire engagement ring, or something lab-created rather than mined.

@Andi very nice! I tried telling him he could get a moissanite for me instead of a diamond but he seems very stern in diamonds.

@m I would have loved a family heirloom ring, of any kind, but sadly this is not the case. Smiley sad

He has a certain timeframe of proposing and asked me if I would be okay with a moissanite first, and then 4-6 months later replacing with the diamond equivalent. I think what I might do is turn the moissy ring into a pendant necklace after, or maybe just make the diamond ring the wedding ring. Or, I could just tell him that I'm perfectly happy with just the moissy.

I have a moissanite ring and I love it! We're gonna eventually upgrade to a diamond though. But honestly everyone I show can't tell the difference.

I have a moissy and when I took it to a jeweler for sizing, they couldn't tell the difference. Diamonds are overpriced and overvalued so it would have been a waste of money for us.

Diamonds are never worth what you pay for them. In terms of ROI, it's a losing proposition, even if the jeweler tells you they're investment quality. I'm all for moissanite. Their sparkle is unbelievable, and while not cheap, you get a lot more size and sparkle for your dollar.

I have a Moissy ring, and I love it. Moissanite is actually tougher than diamond is, so don't let that aspect scare you. No one has ever guessed that my ring isn't diamond- and I love the fact that it is so sparkly. It has a character all its own and it didn't cost a fortune. I recommend it to everyone.

I have never seen Moussanite in person but if I had and it compared, I would have probably gone that route, bc diamonds are super expensive and mine is small, although very good quality. So it would have been nice to have been able to get the stone size and setting I wanted, which we couldn't afford in diamonds (would have been like $9,000+). I don't know anyone who has one.

I have a morganite center stone, and it's gorgeous. My younger sister has a moissanite, and it is also gorgeous. My older sister has a yellow diamond as her center stone and it's gorgeous as well. But what matters most is they all fit us and our personalities. If my FH had bought me a diamond the size of my morganite, I might have murdered him. Same with my little sister and her moissanite - we had other priorities, and we both wanted something really unique and we were both against diamonds in general.

And diamonds are a fairly new thing in engagement rings. Both my grandmothers had diamonds in their jewelry collections, but on my mother's side, she had rubies in her wedding ring, and my dad's side, it was sapphires. And I think having something different must run in our family - most of my aunts and a bunch of my cousins have unique or custom designed rings, most with alternative stones. (:
