Diamond Vs. Moissanite

Those who have Moissy rings, how are they? Do they hold up well? On r/justengaged I see quite a bit of moissanite rings and they're normally well received. Do you think they'll eventually replace diamonds for engagement rings and become the new norm? Have you seen them side by side?

That's what I try to tell him, but he's pretty stubborn. Maybe when he gets the moissy he will love it in person and perhaps not bring up the diamond ring at all! I also don't know anyone who has one so it's hard for me to see for myself if I like it, and until he actually gets it I don't think he will be swayed either.

So I actually did a diamond hybrid. I work in construction and loose stuff all the time so taking my ring off isn't an option for me. I did a lot of research before and the biggest thing for me was that the hardness is comparable so wearing over the years scares me less. My fiance did a custom design with MiaDonna and honestly could not have been happier. This way too we aren't breaking the bank with it, but honestly the most important thing isn't the stone but who it comes from, no matter what it is! Smiley smile

I have a diamond. It's an heirloom, but we never even considered getting any other stone when we were looking. Diamonds can increase in value. Will a moissy? Probably not. I'd like something of value to pass down to the women of my family. Just like great grandma did for me. When my mother had the ring appraised in 1973 it was worth $8,000 now it has almost doubled.

I had never even heard of moissy, I looked them up after reading this post and it seems like a good deal! I would be really curious to see one in person. I love my diamond but if we didn't have the money for it I would have been open to other options. I would love to see pictures of some of your ladies moissy rings...someone should make a post!!

I am so glad that moissanite and alternate gemstones are FINALLY being accepted in the jewelry world! I have a family diamond, but if I didn't, you bet I would have a moissanite on my finger. However, I work in a jewelry store, and it so SO SAD for girls that come in thinking that they have a diamond when it reality, its CZ or moissanite.

Diamonds do not increase in value. They are compressed coal and there are millions of them.

I think the average person would not be able to tell the difference, especially to the naked eye. Definitely a great option and budget friendly. I have heard there are some cuts in moissanite that are not as readily available but don't know the truth to that.

Go to a jewelry counter in Macy's or Filenes. Ask to see moissanite set in precious metal. It will literally take your breath away. I adore moissanite. Their fire and sparkle is really unparalleled. Again, don't mistake them for CZs. They are not inexpensive, but they are far less costly than a diamond, are almost as hard, and they will last a lifetime. They're about $300 a carat, so compare that to your average diamond.

As for diamond appraisals? The gemological institute appraisal -- perhaps valuable for insurance companies -- doesn't mean a lot in the resale markets. I was given a pair of 1/2 carat (each) diamond studs set in platinum with screw on posts. One was of superior grade to the other, but the difference was negligible. Do you know what I was offered for these $8K stunners (and I had the detailed appraisal)? About $900.

I have moissantite stones in my ring b/c FH and myself are against the diamond business. The stones are so pretty; they have more optical properties than a diamond. We had a custom ring made and it was the same price with diamonds or moissanties.

I'll be sure to tell my mother she got scammed in the 70's then.

Yes I'm aware this is from 2012, but it still says "the prices of well-cut and larger diamonds have actually increased up to 35% or 40% at one point" This seems to be the census of what I've looked up.

My first engagement ring was mossanite, it did sparkle a lot. It was a 1 1/2 princess cut.. I could tell it wasn't a diamond. The depth seemed off from the top. If i get another mossanite it would be a round, cushion or radiant.

I also have a morganite ring and earrings! I love it. Mine is more of a peachy color than pink. I think those gems are going to be HTF.

Haven't heard of moissanite, but it sounds different from clarity enhanced diamonds -- have you looked into those? I know they're a point of controversy, too...But they're real diamonds, with the flaws filled in, so they're extra sparkly. And they have a lifetime warranty, so if anything ever happens to the filling, they'll fix it (this would make me slightly nervous, but it seems okay). The ones I saw were maybe 20-30% cheaper than regular diamonds, and they look amazing! They seem like a good option for people who 1) don't care that their diamond isn't 100% natural, or 2) won't be able to upgrade for a while, but still want a real diamond immediately. I am definitely getting clarity enhanced solitaires eventually...

I have a moissanite and I love it. I also was very nervous about it. They are so beautiful and you can hardly tell a difference. I actually have a moissanite engagement ring and diamond wedding band, and you cannot tell. Check out pictures at my blog: www.offthebandwagonbride.com!

I’m on the fence because I worry the clarity will be the giveaway. The lower cost does appeal to me.
