Did anyone regret letting their bridesmaids pick their own dresses?

Rachel, on October 28, 2016 at 12:46 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 38

Hey all! I had planned to give my bridesmaids a color swatch and let them each pick their own dress based on what they feel comfortable in/what their style is. I have been warned by 3 different people however that this is not a good idea, one of whom was a friend who did this same thing and ended up regretting it. Anyone have personal experiences of being happy/unahppy they did it this way?

We went to David's Bridal. I chose a color and length and let them pick whatever dress they wanted. They all chose a different dress and I love it! Each dress is somewhat reflective of their personalities and I can tell they like them. That makes me happy.

Nope! I was a bridesmaid for a friend last year, and she gave us 4-5 different colors she liked and an overall vibe she was going for. We all picked our own and ended up coordinating really well! Her wedding vendors couldn't stop gushing about how nice it was to see something different for a change Smiley smile

I gave my girls a color swatch and I am let them pick out whatever they feel comfortable wearing in that color. They all have been gracious enough to send me photos or have me go with them to get my input. I've liked all of the ones the girls have chosen because if they feel good and comfortable in it, what's not to like. I want them all to feel good and excited to be wearing the dress, especially because there will be tons of photographs. I don't think you will have any regrets letting the girls pick their own dresses, and I am sure they will all run it by you before purchasing anything.

I said knee length and navy and they've been sending me pics (even though I didn't even ask them to), and they all look great! Tell those people to stop being so uptight.

Nope. I just told them dark purple and they ended up picking out pretty similar dresses actually.

Thank you for the feedback! I was really excited to let each one pick her own dress to reflect her personality/style, and was kind of surprised at the warnings I had received. But I'll just stick with my original plan. Those are good suggestions as well, Sarah and GreeneBunny. And very pretty picture, WWLynnie! I love that look! :-)

If you are worried about it I would give them a little more guidance than just a color. I was in a wedding where I was given two colors to choose from. What we ended up with was some girls in long dresses, some in short. Some girls in printed dresses with mixed colors, some in one color dresses. Personally, I didn't like the look of it all together. The bride didn't mind. So it depends on your preferences. I think a color swatch is a good idea as we also had different shades of the colors. Again, if that matters to you. I think for the most part it works out though. Good luck!

I think I'm just going to ask the material be the same all chiffon or satin, ext. I'm leaning towards letting them even pick the color based on my color scheme.

Nope. It's meaning one less thing I have to decide on.

I only asked that they be one color and not a halter top, which I despise.

You can definitely go with just giving them a color swatch and letting them pick! If you are worried about what they might pick (or how it would go together as a group), you can always add a few other "requirements". All long or all short, no strapless, no prints... things like that. If you have a vision in your head, remember that your girls aren't mind readers, they'll need some guidance. Or if you really just want final veto power, just ask to see a picture before they buy/order it so you have an idea. Good luck Smiley smile

I haven't done it yet but plan to give them a color and length to pick. At the end of the day you want them to be comfortable and feel pretty too and everyone has different styles/body types so it seems like the best way to go to make everyone happy

Nope I told them a color and length. They decided they wanted to match so they all picked a dress together. It was super easy.

I did. I gave girls a color pallet, needed to be chiffon, & long. Rest was up to them. Turned out beautifully.

I just gave them a color, length, and asked them to select the same fabric. I only have two and we are all super close. I want to them love and be comfortable in their dress.

I used weddingtonway, where you can put together a 'showroom' of different dresses and then let them pick whatever they wanted. It's close to giving them a swatch and a length, but since it was all the same designer, it was a bit more coordinated. I think they had about 20 dresses to chose from and I feel like it came out great. (The guy on the right was my bridesman)
