Did i order the wrong size wedding dress?

Stephanie, on September 20, 2022 at 2:34 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 5

Help! I'm extremely nervous I ordered the wrong size wedding dress. My bust (with a bra on) and hips measured at a size 2, and my waist measured at a size 8. They suggested I order a size 8, which I did. My mom who use to work in alternations said I should have ordered a size 6 as it's much harder to take in the bust than let out and inch to half an inch in the waist. I also don't plan on wearing a bra with my dress, so realistically I might need to take even more in. I called the store and they told me that they couldn't guarantee the dress would fit if I went down a size. I also read that you have to cut the dress if you want to take down more than 2 sizes? I'm not really sure what to do.... and realistically will probably be 5lbs lighter come wedding day.

I don't work in alterations, so I would probably take your moms advice on this one, BUT I'm sure it's all going to be fine. My sister is a size 2/4 and she bought a size 14 wedding dress [floor sale] and after many alterations, it fit beautifully! If she can go down that many sizes...I'm pretty sure you'll be okay!

Every sore I went to / every dress sizing advice I have ever heard is ALWAYS “order to your largest measurement” so it sounds like it was ordered correctly.

I've also always heard to order to your largest measurement. It's easier to take something in than out, and I'm sure a seamstress would be able to handle taking your dress in at the top and make the whole thing look like a perfect dress. I'd also say that the shop you ordered from would probably have a better idea on how your specific dress is able to be altered and how best to order based on your measurements.

I know your mom is a seamstress but I’d argue that it’s an even worse problem to have to let a dress out than it is to take in. This is what happened to me. The sales lady ordered it so tight that I could barely breathe and argued with me that it’s what the chart said to order and that there was no room to let out the dress! The company had done custom work to cover up the low back, so there was no returning it and getting a bigger size. It was one of the worst problems I dealt with during wedding planning. I was lucky to eventually find a seamstress who could remove the boning and carefully let out the dress enough without needing to do major work on it such as adding fabric or turning the closure into a corset. The whole experience still made me so scared that it would be too tight on my wedding day that I kept a super strict diet and lost so much weight that people actually NOTICED and commented on it 😔 (I was practically skin and bones by my wedding day)
