Did the groomsmens’ suits all match?

Debbie, on November 6, 2021 at 12:02 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13
They usually all wear/order/rent the same suit right? I’m trying to compromise some items with my fiancé and he wants them to wear a black suit they already own. Has anyone done or heard of this?

Mismatched groomsmen are totally a thing. Just like with bridesmaids, it does take some coordination. You can't just have everyone wear whatever they want and expect a hodgepodge of outfits to look cohesive. I think as long as your groomsmen are "evenly" mismatched it would look fine.

I do think it looks weird if the suits aren't close enough, or if some of the suits match exactly and only one or two others are very different and look out of place. So IMO they either all need to be fairly evenly mismatched, or if someone stands out it should be the groom (who should stand out the most) and then the best man. Additionally, if you have some coordination of accessories (ex: navy suits with brown shoes and belt) it helps pull the looks together.

Here are some examples. I think most of these look fine, although some I like better than others.

Here, I think it would be odd of the guy in the lightest gray suit was not the groom, but this mismatched look works really well if he is the groom, the medium gray is the best man, and the two darker gray suits are groomsmen:

Here, I think the two brighter blue suits stand out too much in a sea of otherwise midnight navy suits. I think the one guy in bright blue in the middle is the groom, but the other guy on the end in brighter blue looks out of place to me.

Groomsmen*. This is amazing. Thanks so much for your feedback. Totally makes sense. I love the idea of hey all wear brown shoes a x color tie similar style suit. Thank you! Will save these samples. I also was given the responsibility of choosing his color of suit. It’s a Cancún wedding. He has blue eyes so thought a beautiful deep blue perfect. Then I think classic black is so elegant. Is color of suit simply personal preference? How did you/he decide?

We both liked a navy/dark blue suit. My husband already had a dark gray suit which was pretty much his default attire for every wedding we have gone to, so he wanted something new and different from what he already had to make our wedding stand out and be special. He also preferred to buy something he could keep, rather than rent for our own wedding.

Black is timeless, but I also feel like its a bit more formal. Since we were having a springtime, outdoor wedding on a farm in a rural area, dark blue felt like a better fit. We also felt dark blue would be more versatile for my husband to wear in the future. In our social circle, we have very few formal, black-tie, or fancier events, and most of the weddings we go to are outdoors and during the warmer months when the days are pretty long. So while black would be ideal for an estate wedding or nighttime event, we just pretty much never have those to go to. If we ever had to go to a black-tie or white-tie event he would probably just rent a tux for that occasion.

It's up to your two. We had all the guys rent the same tux for our wedding. My sister in law just had all the men wear a navy blue suit, and they all looked good in pictures.

We had our guys rent grey suits, so they all matched - but we told them to just wear black shoes out of their closets instead of renting matching ones. I think as long as they're all the same color it won't matter - and it'll save them some money, so it's a super nice gesture.

ETA - Make sure they're all wearing the same color shirt and the same accessories, and I don't think you'll notice at all.

My personal preference is that the groomsmen all wear matching suits/shirts/ties. It is your choice, though. In the grand scheme of life, it is a pretty minor issue. Plus, it depends on the formality of the wedding. Nonetheless, I think it not an unreasonable expectation to have matching groomsmen attire

My husband’s groomsmen both owned black suits already so they just wore those. Looked absolutely fine.

We plan on asking them to wear any blue or gray suit they already own! I kind of love the mismatched vibe, and our guys all have suits in these colors. We're also doing mismatched with the bridesmaids!

We told all our groomsmen to wear a black suit they already owned. They were mismatched but I liked that look; our bridesmaids were a little mismatched on purpose too. I think the groomsmen looked great!

I've been to lots of weddings where the men did this. It's not a big deal at all and I would let your FI make the decision.

All our guys wore black suits they already owned. My husband has been in a lot of weddings and always spends $250+ to rent a suit or tux so he didn’t want to make his groomsmen spend that much. They all wore white shirts and we bought their ties. It looked great.

Some colors for suits are fairly universal across designers - black, navy, white. I think there's more room for color variety if you choose gray or tan, but all the suits should work well if they're all black. We just told our groomsmen to wear a navy suit then order the tie we picked out. We got them all together and the colors are surprisingly very similar with the majority of the variations being buttons, seams, lapels, and pockets - nothing major. Best of luck to you!
