Hey everyone, FH and I are in a tough decision to purchase a home before or after the wedding. We are currently paying a little over a 1k for our apartment which FH is no longer thrilled about. Hey everyone, FH and I are in a tough decision to purchase a home before or after the wedding. We are currently paying a little over a 1k for our apartment which FH is no longer thrilled about. The problem is our wedding is February 2018 and our lease is up March 2018. I am thinking with so many large wedding expenses coming out of our account during the home buying process may not look good to lenders however FH does not want to rent another apartment. When did you all purchase your home, before or after your wedding and why? Smiley smile

We bought our home about 2 years ago, before we were even engaged. We had already lived together for a couple of years, and frequently talked about marriage. Our reasoning was that the cost of renting and the cost of buying were about equal in our area, so figured we'd rather have the money go towards building equity. We also figured buying a house before would help to keep us more realistic when setting our wedding budget. There is a lot of cash involved upfront on buying a house, so we made the mutual decision to hold of on getting engaged/getting married. Now two years later we are finally planning a wedding for 2018!

I'm in the same situation! Our wedding is August 5th and our lease ends in June. It was too close to do both. We decided we will sign our apartment lease for one last year. Before I sign it again I am going to see if they will negotiate and perhaps allow us to do a 6 month lease. What's one more year? It will go quick (I hope!). Good luck!

We got engaged on 12/24/16 and put an offer on our house on 12/30/16!!! We just moved in on 3/3.

If you can put 20% down, no PMI and are not financing your wedding I say do it!! A few other posts mention that you can't have any inquiries or a decrease in your credit score from the time you apply for mortgage until the second you close, they are 100% right!! Any credit card charge is assumed to be a reoccurring monthly expense ( as per bank).

We needed to pay $400 for a deposit on photographer (credit card only) and my parents paid and we paid them back the day we closed !

We are loving every second of it!!!! Good luck!!!

We got engaged in July 2016 and signed a contract to have a house built in August 2016. The home is scheduled for delivery at close on 22 June, which is 5 days after the wedding. It's exciting but stressful. My house sale closes on this Friday and I'm renting back until 26 June. FH's house goes on the market for sale tomorrow at midnight. My house sold in 3 days. We are hoping the same for FH's home. He lives in a more desirable neighborhood than I do but we both have 2 level condos with 3 br/2.5 bath and one car garage.

I'm excited to have it work out timing wise because there is no way either of us could live with the other with 4 kids and 3 cats between us.

We plan on buying our home after the wedding because our lease ends while we are on our honeymoon. We will be signing a 6 month lease before we leave. It will a lot less stressful then coming back from our honeymoon and looking for a house right away. I would do whatever makes you and your FH comfortable.

We bought our house before making any significant moves on our wedding. We wanted to make sure everything went through, but we ended up booking our venue the week after we moved in, and in the three weeks since have got the venue, photographer, catering, dress, and hotel blocks all taken care of. Waiting gave us the extra time to research and tour venues and attempted to teach me patience

If you guys are financially stable, I'd rent. It's just my opinion though. Buying a house is not an easy task.

We actually started building a few months before we got engaged because the finances were in order, but we've been renting an apartment for over a year now and are so glad to get out of this place and own a home!

I bought a home 5 yrs ago before I met my fiancé. We are getting married in a few months. Next year we will move somewhere we both pick. It's kind of nice we will have awesome equity built up when we sell, bc the market in our area has soared!

FH and I are looking into moving out of MD so we won't buy until we know where we want to settle. It's hard though because he's in a union and trying to switch unions, from what he has inquired about, is difficult and comes with many setbacks.

We are in the process of buying our home now. It is almost done being built. Our closing date will be a month before our wedding date. We had to make a deposit for the venue and honeymoon back in March and thank God the lender didn't say anything about the withdrawals.

I agree with others research and see what you can get pre approved for.

So I have student loans, I'm paying for a wedding, and I was unemployed for about a month, but my fiancé is military so we were able to get a VA Loan. We applied for the loan in January and got approved in March for our home. It's being build and won't be ready until July, but we got all the expenses out of the way before all the money was due for the wedding.

We went with it because we didn't know what the market would look like in 7-8 months. He had the money right now and were able to do everything through him. Without the VA, we wouldn't have been able to do it.

Ugh I can't wait to buy a home. If it were up to me I'd be using the money for the wedding as the down payment but we are not home right now and honestly won't know when we will be home. So we are holding off on buying

We bought ours before which is why we waited 2 years to get engaged. If you can wait till after you may be in a better position. You may get gifts you can put towards your down payment.

We currently live in the condo my fiancé purchased years ago. We want to purchase a larger home with yard for our doggies, but we are waiting until next year. I am currently a full time nursing student and only work part time. We decided the timing will be better after the wedding and school.

We purchased our home prior to wedding - and after being married for 6 months I am so happy we did it that way. Getting home from the honeymoon as Mr. and Mrs., to our actual HOME (vs apartment), felt so great!! No more moving boxes for a long time :-)
