Didn’t like my mu trial

Hello all, I am looking for advice after i just had my hair/MU trial. I had booked with a salon way back in February because I’d seen good reviews and liked photos. After I signed the contract the owner told me to reach out in May to schedule a trial. So May 1st I had to email a couple times before she said I should schedule for the same month as my wedding since my hair and skin will be as close as possible.

Fast forward to today when I had my trial which was $180 extra. The hair part was good. Makeup ended up looking nothing like the photo and I was dissatisfied. I am very good at my own makeup and I think I’m realizing I can’t seem to be satisfied with anyone else’s work but mine. More my issue than the artist’s. I would cancel her part of the services but looking back at my contract it says I can only cancel for a refund 2 months or more from the wedding. So unfortunately since they had me schedule one month before I can’t cancel.
My question is, would it be an awful thing to do to keep the MU artist hired for just my bridesmaids but do my own makeup. I might still want her to apply lashes for me

I think it’s a reasonable ask. But double-check your contract and make sure there’s not some kind of clause that prevents it. Some vendors don’t let you display a similar product from somewhere else because they don’t want their reputation affected by people naturally assuming it’s all from the same place. That’s usually with food or decor, but I could see a similar clause for not doing only part of the bridal party’s makeup.

As long as that’s not part of it, I think you can (nicely) say you realized you want her to just put on eyelashes and otherwise you want to do your own makeup. You may still be on the hook for paying the whole amount, though.

What did you not like about the makeup? Was your MUA receptive to your comments during the application? Did you bring up your concerns after she was done? She may offer another trial at discount or free given their timeline did not follow the contract. I would call and bring up your concerns. You could give her time to plan an adjustment if it's just colors and not her skill. Another thing to keep in mind is that makeup for photo shoots will be bolder than daily wear, particularly for brides wearing white (dress, veil, or both). I hope your MUA is experienced with weddings and not just special events. Best wishes.

The professional makeup in part should involve expertise in making the bride more photogenic --without side-effects but also by enhancing features of her face.

I wonder if you call and say you were not satisfied that perhaps they would want to do a second trial. It would be awkward for them to get a review saying you chose not to have them do your makeup.

I d definitely check and see if they let you out of the makeup side of the contract. If not be very honest about what you didn't like and what you need to be different. Good luck 💜
