Different length bridesmaid dresses.

michelle d, on April 27, 2017 at 1:01 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 13

Can I do different length bridesmaid dresses if they are all by the same company and are the same colors? I just have some bridesmaids who are petite and others who are not. Besides the cost of alterations, some people look better in short dresses.

I personally hate the look of short BM dresses.

I would keep them all the same length, and allow them to pick out which style of top suits them best, in the same color if that's what you want.

But, it's your wedding, do what you want, as long as everyone is comfortable in their dress!

The way I see it is let them wear the dress they want you pick the color. Then they feel comfortable and it will show in the photos. Some bridesmaids just look stiff to me if they are wearing a dress they don't feel beautiful in.

I was a bridesmaid in my sister's wedding and she picked a dress that I looked horrible in. I changed out of that thing about five minutes after the pictures were over. I love the acceptance now of just having the same color but letting the girls pick what they want so they can feel comfortable and pretty too.

I'm with @AK and @fallbride . I like symmetry to an extent. I think short dresses look kind of informal especially if they're standing next to a groomsman in a tux. I would go for at least the same length (whether it be short or long) but a different style top that will make them feel comfortable.

I'm all for what ever best fits your bridesmaids as long as they feel beautiful and you like the way they look that's all that matters.

I like different styles to accommodate everyone's body shape and what they feel comfortable in. Dress length is different, though, because shorter dresses are very casual (and shoes might matter more), while long dresses look more formal.

But if you don't feel like they'll look odd, then do it.

I'm doing a brunch wedding and the men are wearing suits not tuxes so I think it gives me some leeway with formalities

Thank you all also for your thoughts. I'm lucky that all the bridesmaids are flexible. I just want them to feel comfortable in what they are wearing and I don't want it to break the bank for them

I like same color and same length. Went to a Boho wedding last summer that was like that and nobody could tell who the bridal party was because she didn't do flowers either.

@MFB I can see how you feel that way with the information I provided. I asked her first and she was fine with it. And it was actually well into the reception when I took it off. It was a long, tight formal gown for a daytime wedding and we all changed out of them at around the same time. And turns out I was pregnant at the time which was why I was so uncomfortable. My point was, as a PP said, I think it's really important to take into account body types and comfort levels when demanding someone wear something for you. I didn't do it for my first wedding, and didn't hear the end of it from my bridesmaids for years. They still bring it up, especially when I said I was getting married again. First thing they said was "congratulations!" Second thing they said "you're not going to make us wear matching dresses like before right?"

While I like the trend of different dresses I prefer them to be of same length.

I too think that same length is best.
