Did you go into your relationship knowing you didn’t want any kids? When’s too early to have the conversation about having them? Was that a deal breaker?

I am what's known as a "fencesitter". When I was young I always thought I'd have one or two kids, starting around 27/28. I started dating my DH at 21 and we discussed kids early on. As I got into my 20s, I started balking at the possibility of having kids and started recognizing in myself some hallmarks of childfree people. Then we spent a weekend with one of DH's cousins, who is CF with her DH, and all their CF friends and that made me realize I did want kids in some capacity. My sticking point is pregnancy and early childhood...I don't have any desire to be pregnant or care for an infant, potty train etc. Helping a kid with homework, teaching them to cook, stuff like that, I would love to do.

My DH and I are strongly considering adopting out of foster care, which I know has lots of difficulties, but they are difficulties I would be happy to take on as opposed to the difficulties of pregnancy and childbirth that just fill me with dread. I may have a bio kid at some point, but I don't have a desire to do that now.

I know of two couples that got divorced because one wanted them, one did not and thought they would change their mind. They didn't, and split up. It also bothers me when people (usually parents) badger their adult kids into making them grandparents. Stay out of it!!
