Disagreement on Photographer

Brokenbride27, on May 13, 2019 at 1:04 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 22
My photographer cost about $4000, but includes engagement photo session, bridal portraits, digital files for the wedding photos, and some other things. However, she does not include the actual engagement photos, those we buy separately. So we get the photo shoot part, just not the photos. My fianceé’s family is throwing a fit over having to buy some and is talking down to us like we hired a “scam artist” as they put it. Just curious as to how much yall have spent on wedding photography? Another thing to point out is my fianceé’s side of the family has not offered us help with anything and they constantly ask questions about engagement parties or showers as though we’re supposed to pay for and host all of that too. So my second question is what should the groom side be responsible for? My family just cannot afford to do everything yet we aren’t getting any help at all.

So you get the engagement session but no access to those digital files without paying additionally? That is a little strange. I don't know if I'd label them a scam artist, per say, but that is a little sketchy in my opinion.

I have NEVER heard of that before. For 4000$ you should be getting the engagement pictures included. I have heard of a few photographers that will price around 1-2000$ and then ask you to pay for the prints separately but 4000 is just crazy in my opinion. I can see why they might be thinking that. Traditionally, the grooms family is responsible for the rehearsal dinner and MAYBE part of the honeymoon if they want (usually varies from couple to couple- we paid for our honeymoon ourselves). As far as engagement parties and showers go, my husband and I never had an engagement party thrown for us (you need to have someone OFFER to do this for you) and same goes for the showers. I had some ladies from my church offer to throw me one (as well as my bridesmaids who helped) and my MIL also threw a shower for me with her side of the family. They definitely need to offer to do these things for you though. If it is still early, I wouldn't worry about an engagement party, as far as the showers go, those that offered to through me showers didn't offer until I was about 7 month away from my wedding. So you still have a lot of time. Also a lot of times the maid of honor will be the one to "host"/throw the shower so maybe talk to your maid of honor at some point?

What are the “other things” that are included and how many hours do you get for engagement photos, bridal portraits and the wedding day? We’re paying $3,000 for a 1 hour engagement session, 25 edited engagement photos, 8 hours with two shooters on the wedding day and a full digital album of wedding photos with printing rights.

Honestly, the money you’re spending isn’t anyone’s business but yours and your FH’s so as long as you two are on the same page, his family’s opinions don’t matter. As far as them being responsible for costs, they aren’t. If no one offers to host, you simply don’t have an engagement party or shower.

10 hours of photography day of, 2 photographers, she coordinates the other vendors for us, and I can’t remember the others. I’d have to search for our contract.

$4000 includes the wedding day, bridal portraits, wedding photos, 10 hours of photography, 2 photographers, and some other things though...in my opinion $4000 is a pretty good deal for all of that. Her work is the best I’ve seen too.

I think for the amount of hours you’re getting, the price makes sense. You’re essentially getting 25 hours (15 from your main photographer and 10 from your second shooter) of photography. That’s only $160 an hour before taking into consideration the hours worth of editing that will go into those three separate photo shoots.

I have just never heard of someone priced that high for all of that and not include at least a small amount of edited digital copies. Maybe that's because the vendors are priced differently based on location? It just sounds a little sketchy to me as well like PP has said.

My photographer offered a complimentary "short and sweet engagement session." Basically, it was a way for us to meet in person before the wedding. If we wanted the photos afterwards, we could either purchase individual prints(cost dependent on size/number of prints), specific digital files (I think it was like 5 to 8 dollars per pic) or the entire digital library (250.00). So the actual shoot cost us nothing. Had we chosen not to purchase photos, there would be no compensation for the photographer. We did buy the entire gallery because we really don't take photos. Seriously, we might take 3 to 5 photos a year lol.

We you given the option between the engagement shoot and bridal photos? We’re paying 3500 for 10 hours, 2 photographers and that got too pick three add-one. We’d already don’t an engagement shoot so we picked a boudoir shoot, an album, and a large print. It does seem a bit odd that she would offer an engagement shoot but not the photos (that’s just not the norm anymore). I would ask for some clarification on that and what the cost for those photos will be. But with everything else you describe I do think your total cost is fine.

For comparison, I have one shooter for 6 hours on our wedding day. We will have digital files of the photos and no actual prints/albums. I believe our cost is approximately 2 grand.

Mine is $2246 for seven hours on the wedding day and all the digital files. My engagement photographer was in a separate town and it was $300 for the session. We could access the files free for 30 days and then pay after the 30 days for prints. I had everything printed at Walgreens super cheap but they look great. My boudoir photographer (also different) was $300 for the session and 60 digital files, which I had printed through a photo company.

We didn't have our parents pay for the engagement photos. We gave them as Christmas gifts. I made each set of parents a photo book, a few prints and one framed print. If they didn't like it, tough luck. Hope they look forward to their next Christmas presents, which will be more photos lol. It's not free to me. So I get your point. Also, sorry for commenting so many times.🤣

I'm paying $1350 for 10 hours of coverage for two photographers plus our engagement photos were included. This included all the digital files for the wedding and the engagement session.

We're paying $3000 for a similar package, but that includes the engagement session photos. We just had them taken this past weekend, and our photographer said she'll send me the link to the finished photos in about 2 weeks. She took about 200 photos. After processing, editing, throwing out the dumb ones (where we're not looking our best), we'll get a link to access ALL of the photos. Our package does not include the bridal portraits. So maybe that's the difference in your package. Do you get those as part of your package, or do you have to pay separately for those too.

We are in Denver. We are spending $3,200 on our photographer, she is pretty well-known & always voted in "The Knot's Best Vendors". That package includes an adventure engagement shoot + 100+ edited images, 8 hours on our wedding day with her assistant and 800+ edited pictures. Both have a print release.

The groom's family isn't responsible for anything, and neither is the bride's family. Traditionally, all the groom's family pays for is the rehearsal dinner. But in this generation, it's more "who can afford what".

Could you get a better deal if you cut out the engagement photo shoot?

I think you should really research. Also the pricing all depends in the region your in. Im in northern New Jersey and we are paying $10,000 for photos video & DJ. Plus we threw in a percussionist (FH is ecstatic) a 6ft robot man for a show, dancing on clouds, and 2 sparklers. The only thing I dont receive is a physical album with my pictures but I get a USB with every single picture taken bad or good.
