diy flowers

Sarah , on September 17, 2018 at 7:16 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 9

I've had a few friends do flowers themselves and they turned out beautifully; and after looking at prices in my area and getting terrified by paying that amount of money for flowers, I brought up the idea of DIY with my mother. She immediately thought it was such a bad idea and that I'm not going to have time, be too stressed, etc. We are getting married in a different state than where we live, but will likely have to get there on Tuesday for our Saturday wedding (to get the license). I'm sure between Tuesday and Saturday I'd have down time, and I actually like arranging flowers. Any suggestions from brides who've done DIY? Any regrets?

I don't suppose your in the Cincinnati, Dayton area? We have the Flowerman here. Another inexpensive flower option is getting your wedding flowers from Costco and Sam's Club. I've read great things.

We did the flowers ourselves and couldn’t have been happier. I ordered form Sam’s Club and spent around $250 and we had way more than we needed. We made 5 bouquets and over a dozen centerpieces, plus hanging jars for the ceremony site. I had the flowers delivered to my aunt’s house on Thursday (ours was a semi-destination wedding and her house was on the way). She followed the unpacking directions and put them in buckets for us. We picked them up on Friday on our way to the wedding location. Saturday morning, my MIL, husband’s aunt, and my aunt made the bouquets and centerpieces. It really didn’t take long. I just couldn’t justify spending more than we did on something we only needed for a few hours. We gave all the centerpieces to the Inn where our wedding was for lobby decor the next day and my mom took the leftover home and took them to work.

Hi Sarah! I think if you have enough time for it, go for it! I know that a lot of people have done this and had great experiences with it! I found two previous discussions that have great advice on DIYing your flowers, I'll link them below for you to go through!

I did my flowers. I kept everything pretty simple, and after much “LET US HELP!!” yelling I caved and allowed some family to aid in centerpiece assembly 🤣. It was fun.

The best advice is : PRACTICE. I made a couple sample bouquets ahead of time and figured out exactly what I wanted, and the technique. For bouquets, it helped to have a second pair of hands (basically just to hold things in place while I taped)— I was so determined to do everything on my own, but I’ll say- don’t be afraid to ask for help!

One thing to consider is the flowers themselves hadve a specific timeline to be at their prime, so you can’t do everything on your schedule— you kind of have to go by the flowers’ Schedule. I used FiftyFlowers and they gave all sorts of care information and determined the flower delivery schedule for them to be best for the day of the event. So I did all the arranging the Friday before the wedding. I was pretty chill and organized so I had time, BUT what was stressful, is, guests were arriving in town and kept stopping by to visit ! THAT honestly was my biggest challenge— finding the right balance for visiting with people who were here for ME and ducking away to my flower “workshop” in the basement where it was cool and dark and ideal for the flowers.

I also warn that it made a huge mess!! Haha. Leaves and stems and regected prices of floral table all over, so don’t forget to leave time for clean up ( haha or do them somewhere out of the way so maybe you don’t have to deal with it immediately)

also make sure you have nice sharp scissors or clippers !! I started with the wrong scissors and everything took me twice as long— the right tool made all the difference!

I am making all of the boutiques and boutineres. I found all the flowers at Walmart. I still would like to add a little more to make it fuller. However on our slim budget I think they are turning out well.

My best friend did hers and I was planning to DIY for mine too, but after thinking how to deliver them to the venue, who is responsible to setup/tear down/cleanup, I ended up hiring a florist...LOL

Thanks all! This has definitely made me feel better. I have plenty of time to practice, so I think the biggest potential hurdle will be getting quiet time before the wedding to make the arrangements. I guess the good thing that we have on our side about having an out-of-state wedding, is that we have to go down almost a week early to get our marriage license.
