Disposable Cameras---a definite NO!

Tatorchip, on June 12, 2008 at 2:53 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

For our wedding, we bought a disposable camera for each of our guest tables. We were so excited to have them developed to see what all our guests captured. Our recommendation to any bride/groom that wants to use this idea...DO NOT DO IT!! It's a huge waste of money. Our reception was darker, so unless you were on top of someone, the pictures were too dark. Plus, so many guests took pictures of the floor or table or their beer bottle, it was ridiculus. We threw away more pictures than we kept! Plus, you cannot zoom in with them, so unless you're next to someone, they aren't going to turn out.

Don't waste your money on the cameras or on getting them developed. You will be highly disappointed.

That's my recommendation.

I guess it depends on what camera's you decide to use. I did the same thing and I didn't have a problem at all with them, most pictures turned out great, and its already a given that your not going to get awesome quality pictures...their disposables. Sorry you had bad experience with them, but I would disagree with it being a big disappointment. If you get the internet cheapies yes, you might expect them to be bad. I spent more and got kodak brand ones, I only needed about 12 of them so i didn't mind paying extra. And its always recommended to get ones with flash.

I bought the disposables when they went on sale at 50% off. I took pictures of the dogs using one and sent the camera to shutterfly.com. They developed the pictures, put them in a file and I can preview and order the ones I like and do nothing with the ones I don't. I was able to create an 8x8 album for free as a promotion. The pictures look great and the album was easy to create. The cost of the envelope was 3.99 postage paid. I was not disappointed.

It sucks you had a bad experience....my sister was at first because all she got were shots of the guests and were dark also and got no pictures of themselves... she got them lightened from snapfish i think, but anyways they looked better, also we recommend using the Kodak b/c they have the best dispoable cameras. Anyways, 5 years down the road my sister & her husband no longer regret doing the dispoasable cameras. Although they were some useless shots there werent many. She also like the fact she got plenty of candid photos of the guests that were there that photographers seem to never catch b/c they are so focused on the newlyweds. Its great to be able to look back and see who shared your special day with you. Heres what we are going to do with ours, give them to selected people to take pictures and if they want let them have double prints! Then u can relax in that they will take better pictures so they have some for themselves, and you dont have to worry about kids grabbing them!

I would absolutely agree with you. A definite NO (for a wedding).

You're paying a photographer huge amounts of money for his expertise and equipment. TELL him to take some candid shots of the people and not just focus on the newlyweds.

People will, without a doubt, bring their own cameras and snap a whole bunch of pictures. ASK them to post them up on shutterfly, or kodak.com or whatever and you can still order the ones you want.

To pay extra for a table camera that will be used once (let's not get into the environmental aspect of this whole conversation), used by people who may not care what types of pictures they take, and then cost you extra money just to find out what kinds of pictures were taken (this is the digital age!!) --- it's ludicrous.

I agree. I think that they would all turn out bad, and you would spend way more than it would actually be worth. For ou upcoming wedding, my fiancee and I rented a vintage style photo booth. Guests can all go in and have their photos made. Each couple is required to have a kissing shot, and they get to take the photos home as their favor. They will have our names and wedding date at the bottom. Then after the booth is picked up I will get a cd with copies of all the guests photos on them. It is a little pricey, but we thought it would be fun.

Well im not sure yet whether or not I will use the disposable cameras or not. I am not having a professional photographer. My mom took all of my engagement pictures and bridal potraits, my mom and a friend of mine are being my "professional" photographers. Me and my fiance have been thinking about the disposable ones. maybe since we are saving money with everything else, we may get a few and see what happens. Sorry you had such a bad experience!

I think it also depends on your guests! My sisters both put cameras on the tables - one sister didn't get that much out of it, but my other sister says that her favorite photos are from those cameras! She loves it because some of the general silliness, that her friends may have kept quiet when the professional photographer came around, was definitely captured on the disposables. As long as you can find them on sale and send them to an online developer like someone else said, it shouldn't be a big expense and it can give you a few laughs! I'll have them at mine I think!

You could also set up a website with snapfish or shutterfly. Most people now have digital camaras anyway. Plus then anyone can get that group photo they were in and thiers did not turn out and that sort of thing. We are going to try this approach and see what happens.

I would agree it depends on the cameras AND guests.

You would definitely want to spend that little extra on the camera, but it won't matter if you don't trust your guests.

The last wedding I attended was 400 strong and almost a third was from a fraternity or sorority. The girls behaved themselves and took some spectacular pictures, but the boys... My friend spent money to develop pictures of the human anatomy and got to play the guessing game. She was very embarrassed when she was going through them with her mother and grandmother.
