DIY boutonnieres - Help needed!

Danielle, on April 17, 2013 at 5:46 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 17

I am making all of the flowers for the wedding day. Has anyone made their own boutonnieres? The ones I have done, look pretty good. I am just worried about the pins. Because they can't go through the stem of the flower (like they would on a real boutonniere) how would you attach it to the tux??

Whether you are using real or faux flowers you can wrap the stem with floral tape,,,the pin just needs to go through the backside...doesn't have to go clear through the stem if you put the pin through just below the bud and not down the stem very far....going through a thick wrap of floral tape will be enough to hold it in place.

You could also try magnets for the boutonnieres... ours are being made by a florist and she is using magnets instead of pins however, I don't know how she attaches them. There would likely be some info to be found through Google on this I would think Smiley smile

Thank you guys for the advice.

I have debated about doing the magnetic strips, but I didn't know if I should splurge a little and buy the ones specifically for flowers or if I could get away with ordering name tag magnets and putting them on the flowers because those are way more inexpensive.

I do have floral tape on the boutonnieres, maybe I just don't have enough. I could wrap them some more and then try the pins.

I have seen pics of DIY bouts using safety pins. The flowers are wrapped with the floral tape to the side of the pin. I think that is how I will do mine.

Youtube!!!! We are doing all of our flowers ourselves (real flowers) and I've been watching a lot of tutorials on youtube. I'm sure there's one's for faux flowers which is what i am assuming you're using?

I can tell you the strips don't work well. There is a little round magnet we use and use 8 of them when the kids show goats and have to keep their numbers on. Flowers weigh more than cardstock.

I'm using golf tees for FHs, but I put a broach pin on the back. Same idea as the safety pin. That way, there's no exposed points like there are with regular bouts. I just hot glued it to the back.

I've done many myself and find the safety pins difficult to put on & wrap the tape around. I think it's easiest to just use a separate pretty longer pin (with pearl top) and pin it to the tape area. It might be good to practice and make samples while you're free so you can get the hang of how to do them for your big day. Good luck! : )

I'm wrapping the ends of them with burlap and using safety pin to attach to the guys' suits.

@Marlina must have read my mind. Just like she posted above.

Pardon my ignorance, but do boutonnieres go on the outside of the jacket safty pinned, or do they go in the pocket?

As far as I know, boutonnieres always go on the lapel, and never the pocket.

Brooch pins! I hot glued them on my bouts which I made out of ribbon roses. It works greatSmiley smile And they are pretty cheap too-found mine at walmart- but also at hobby lobby.
