diy bustle?

Sara, on April 12, 2019 at 3:56 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 4

Hi all! Have any of you fearless DIY'ers attempted a bustle? I ordered custom sizing for my Azazie dress, so barring any large weight loss, the only alterations I'm expecting are a bustle and maybe some reworking of the bust cups. I got a price quote from a lovely seamstress, which is $250 for the bustle and minor cup alteration. My dress itself was $415, so while $250 is technically a great price for NYC, I'm not super thrilled to pay more than 50% for alterations. I'm not a master seamstress, but I know I can handle a cup alteration, and I was considering adding a little hand beading if I had time. Am I crazy to consider doing the bustle myself? Have you added a bustle, how would you go about it? What kind of bustle would you attempt for this dress? https://www.davidsbridal.com/Content_StyleandFashionGuide_BustlesGuide

Here's a stock photo of my dress, the train is a little bit longer than it appears in this photo:

I saw this on another thread here. Since your train looks pretty short and light it may work prefect for you.

If you're still looking for a seamstress check out The Wedding Dresser in Industry City Brooklyn. I had a similar length dress but not as many layers. I Yelp messaged them with a link to my gown and they were able to provide a quote online. For my bhldn Kenna dress for taking the sides in, adding cups, adding a bustle my alterations were $150.
The train loop alternative totally looks doable too if you're not trying to bring the dress anywhere.

Hey Sara! I think your DIY alterations are completely dependant on your ability. Have you decided that you are making the alterations yourself? Maybe you could shop around for other seamstresses to see if you can get a better price! You could search for dry cleaners and tailors in your area that have some promising reviews and contact them for a quote. It may make you feel more comfortable having the alterations done by a professional!

Thanks Jeanelle! I spoke to Susan at the Wedding Dresser, she's great! She did quote me $250, although I actually found another solution- I have a family member who's very skilled at sewing and has done 2 other bustles already, and she offered to help! Smiley smile
