DIY cake stand/plateau help

I Said Yes :-), on February 28, 2014 at 3:55 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 13

Has anyone ever done a DIY cake plateau/stand? I am on a budget and attempting to make my own 16-inch faux gold cake plateau. I can't seem to find any youtube assisatnce on how to do this and/or what materials to use. I'm thinking I can make it out of gold foil covered foam? Please note : I am renting my cake so the fear of the cake stand/plateau collapsing is not an issue. I'm going for something similar to the attached pic.

You're renting a cake? Haha. Also, it might just be worth renting a cake plateau. We're renting one from our baker for $20.

Yes it will be a fake cake with a hidden compartment of real cake for the cake cutting ceremony. It is saving us quite a bit off the $2000 cake I would have gotten from a bakery. I suppose I could rent one if I had to.

200 guests @ $10 per slice was what I was quoted for the elaborate fondant flower design I envisioned :-P

I love the idea of renting a cake - how clever!

Are you doing that via a bakery or is there a specific company that you found?

I dont think gold foil will stick on the foam -

Have you thought about using a wood stand and painting it?

Interesting Smiley smile I was just curious as I thought the $600 for mine was pricy. At least you found a way to get the cake of your dreams in budget.

I've seen those made out of foam but if you haven't had any recent experience with gold foil, I'd attempt a small project first so that you know what you're in for.

also see if you can rent the cake stand from your florist, mine had one in gold and silver.

I would suggest that you check around a bit more because that's extremely high even for NYC.. average is 6$ a slice for that type of cake.

But if it's what you want and you're happy with it that's wonderful. I would rent the stand if you can because foam with gold paper will look bad with an elaborate cake

@ FutureMrsP I found a company online that I am comfortable with given her experience and reputation. Where would I find a wooden stand? A small DIY experiement sounds like a great idea CeCe as I do not want a disaster or to do a bad job as Michele points out. And yes that $10 was an exorbitant amount that left my m outh agape...for a few weeks LOL We don't even care for cake that much to spend more money on that than my photographer!

$2000 for a cake!?!?!?! I almost choked on my gum after reading that! That being said, the idea of renting a "stock/display cake" and having some grocery sheet cakes in the back for people to actually eat is a pretty dern good idea...I think the OP might me onto something here ladies Smiley tongue OH and OP - at Hobby Lobby they have half off all their stuff and they have some cake stands for $15 or less.

Yeah, cakes can be that much - she mentioned fondant flowers. I made 4 roses last week and it took me 3.5 hours... So that's why it costs so much...

But yeah, I think you could cover foam with foil. I would imagine it would be difficult to get the foil to lie flat though and not be wrinkly. What about a gold wrapping paper or something like that instead?

Honestly I found my cake stands at Winners (if you have that) for under $50 for 4 cakes (I'm doing a collection of few smaller cakes).

Hobby Lobby, Michaels or depending on how handy FH is - you could always try to make the size/shape you want with wood from Home Depot/Lowes

Or you could try a store like Pier 1, Home Goods, Bed Bath & Beyond - sometimes they have the cake stands too

I am seriously contemplating this whole concept of renting a cake - we were just going to do sheet cakes anyways and just have small two layer cake to cut...wonder if it would be cheaper

We are getting cake balls and a single tier cake - we will save $175 that way. When we got a cake quote, it was based on each piece being about 2x2 inches...that is what they consider to be a slice....The cake balls are about the size of hockey pucks and are cheaper so we were like "SCORE"!
