DIY Card Birdcage?

FutureMrsChang, on April 15, 2015 at 7:11 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 61

Happy Wednesday All!

I am debating if I should just buy a card birdcage off of Etsy or DIY one? If so, does anyone know where I can find one at a decent price? The cheapest I found was $20, but shipping was like $15!

If I were to purchase the one I want off of Etsy it will be about $80 with shipping.

It seems like at this point it may be easier to drop the $80 because just getting one to DIY is already $45 and that's not including DIY materials...

Any suggestions? Smiley smile TIA!

I did my own! It was on sale for $15 at Joann. I spray painted it and added the ribbon! I want to add a few flowers as well!

What does the $80 Etsy bird cage look like? I have seen card bird cages at tons of stores: Walmart, Michaels, Hobby Lobby, and Marshalls Home Goods. You can always use a coupon at Hobby Lobby or Michaels to bring the price down.

The link is a picture of an Etsy bird cage that you could easily DIY, you just need some ribbon, paper, and fake flowers which would all cost under $10 to make your own rather than spend $80.

I was thinking of doing a card box like this, but my FMIL is worried that because people can see what's in it, there's more of a chance of someone stealing from it? Is this a thing? I think she knew someone who knew someone (not really sure...) who had some waitstaff steal gifts from the wedding.

BTW, I love that Etsy one! I also saw some last weekend at JoAnn Fabrics for $20.

I got mine at joanns as well for $15. I was planning on "fancy-ing" it up, but I kind of love it as is. I can't imagine anyone stealing from it! Is that too optimistic of me?

I bought a cheap one off of Oriental Trading. Believe me, no one noticed. It's one of those details that only you will care about. The cardinals were $40 off of Etsy. They cost me more than the birdcage, including shipping.

I think this is doable. I would DIY it. The hard part may be the fabric flower but I think you can get pre-made ones and then glue it on. Its really pretty.

    Thanks ladies!

I know it's not a huge thing, but I'm really into the details (which is why FH is going to kill me over our floral and design costs!) and I just want everything I pictured for our photographer can take photos of it all. When I look at peoples wedding pictures, my eyes always go immediately towards the detail shots! Lol.

I think it's doable too. The fabric flower I can purchase easily and the material as well. Just need to hot glue gun everything together Smiley smile

I bought this one from Michaels using a 50%OFF coupon, it was about $10, and I did the paper flowers with the styrofoam ball myself.

They have bird cages at Hobby Lobby and they have sales quite often. We got ours there and it turned out great.

Yeah, unfortunately, I have heard of things getting stolen from the birdcage type of "box". I don't for a second think that any of my guests would steal, but, there are so many people at the venue, it could be tempting for people. I'm not sure what we're going to do yet, but, some sort of closed box I think. I think the pink birdcage looks gorgeous by the way. Very lovely.

I was a little nervous about the whole idea of having your cards stolen at the reception. I don't think anyone of our guest will steal from us and our venue only host one wedding per day. So, the only people at the venue will be our guests, vendors, and the venues people. We are planning on putting our gift table in a place pretty safe (nowhere near any exits). I am also going to be asking my mom to remove the cards every so often. Once I noticed all our escort cards are gone (all guests will have arrived) we will remove the cards and plant decoy cards in there! Lol. I been in a handful of weddings and 3 of them did this (1 had a birdcage and the other 2 were old suitcases). It's kinda crazy, but as much as you trust you guests and even your vendors, it's the people working at the venue that keeps me a skeptic.

Wow @June. That was just freaking rude. DIY isn't always about what you can afford. It is about what it is worth.
