DIY Card Birdcage?

Happy Wednesday All! I am debating if I should just buy a card birdcage off of Etsy or DIY one? If so, does anyone know where I can find one at a decent price? The cheapest I found was $20, but shipping was like $15! If I were to purchase the one I want off of Etsy it will be about $80 with...

Happy Wednesday All!

I am debating if I should just buy a card birdcage off of Etsy or DIY one? If so, does anyone know where I can find one at a decent price? The cheapest I found was $20, but shipping was like $15!

If I were to purchase the one I want off of Etsy it will be about $80 with shipping.

It seems like at this point it may be easier to drop the $80 because just getting one to DIY is already $45 and that's not including DIY materials...

Any suggestions? Smiley smile TIA!

FutureMrsChang, I am sure you'll be able to create a lovely DIY birdcage...I know you can find fairly cheap ones at Home Goods (although I am not sure if those exist where you live) and re-purpose it.

I think if you are a little bit crafty and can find a cheap birdcage at a craft store, you should definitely go for it! That's a cute design.

I suppose that if someone is really determined to steal cards, they'll find a way to do it. But you seem to have a good idea about taking them away once all the guests have arrived.

I'm personally going with a DIY card box, just because I thought the design would fit in with our wedding better, but I hope yours turns out awesome! And don't listen to @JuneBride. (Not that you seem like you are).

But seriously, who craps on the whole IDEA of DIY? wtf?

To provide you with a real answer, my FSIL bought tons of birdcages and she got a lot of them from resale shops and garage sales, have you tried anything like that? That and a can of spray paint to freshen it up could do the trick.

ETA: Homegoods is AMAZING and you just refreshed my memory, I've seen lots of birdcages/birds there. I got a ton of small globes for my centerpieces and were only 7 bucks a piece vs 25-30 for globes elsewhere. Very good prices and not that bad of quality for using them for a wedding decoration.

@BostonKate- Im not listening to her.. She just wants attention. I know what you mean though.. It was weird to go off on a DIY project!

Okay JuneBride we get it, you won't be having any DIYs at your wedding. Ummm good for you?

@JuneBrideBrianna, are you fucking kidding me?! I suggest finding another forum because that fucking behavior will not be tolerated.

And please fuck off with your DIY prejudice. I have a youtube channel dedicated to my DIY shenanigans.

@FMC - My sister used birdcages as part of her décor for her wedding and we had the biggest success finding them at Salvation Army, Goodwill and other thrift shops. I think she had six in total and only paid $40 or so in total for all of them. Definitely check out the thrift shops!

Damn JuneBride tone it down...no need for that. Wait, do people really steal cards from the reception area? Not the guest, right? I wonder if I should now put my card box somewhere that's not easy for someone to take...

See, JuneBride, personally I'm not DIYing stuff to save money (in some cases it's probably costing more) but because I enjoy making stuff and I like being able to customize stuff exactly to my tastes and the wedding 'theme'. So maybe not make judgements about people when you don't have a clue?

I'd say DIY it if you think you have the time. The cost on Etsy isn't bad - but I always think DIY adds a special personal touch.

So basically all of us have to go to the courthouse because our parents don't have $150k to spend on one day. Good to know.

About the birdcages, I love all the ones people are posting. (:

Speaking your mind and being a pretentious rude asshat are two different things. Was this like your 4th post?

Most people know that you don't make your first few posts in a forum shitty and mean.

Now back to the question at hand. Some DIY projects are better than other because of the time frame they can be done, the complexity and the lack of opportunity to kill someone (as in catering your own wedding food....) This would seem like a pretty easy, fun thing to do, so why not? You can probably find one at a thrift store or garage sale, spray paint that sucke and your'e good to go. Put nail it to the table. Just kidding....make sure it's in a location that can be seen and I'd suggest emptying it a few times during the evening too.

And i'd suggest not listening to asshats who have no reason to come in with confetti guns loaded.

@WeAreOne - I don't think it's at every wedding by all means, but I've heard of people trying to make off with cards. It tends to be staff or non-guests that have access to the room, although who knows. We are getting married at a hotel, so while the reception is invite only, it is conceivable that a guest at the hotel could sneak into the room. So we have a card box to make it a little less tempting (and less easy) for cards to be stolen. But like the OP, at a certain point, all gifts and cards will be removed to a locked room anyway, just in case. Smiley smile

Edit: "staff", not "vendors". I've never heard of a vendor making off with cards. My brain broke for a second.

If you're already at 40 I would just purchase it! I was this way about my card box (wanted a tiered 'cake' box). Through etsy it was 110$ I figured I could do everything myself for around 35-40. When I went to one of my décor people they had silk tiered boxes to rent for $40. For me it was a no brainer. I didn't need it after the wedding and would've came out better than mine, so I went that route.

However I found table numbers and escort/place cards on etsy that I loved which would've been around $200 for everything. FH and I spent time together (which was really nice because we haven't done that on stuff for the wedding) and made them together. It was just layering different card stock. Spent time getting everything and then we made them. Gave us something to do, saved us money and we enjoyed it. I love how they came out!

@FutureMrsChang and all others wondering about the card box, I had one that had a lid and asked my aunt to empty the box and store the cards throughout the evening. It would be devastating if anyone lost the cards that you received.

If you have a Michael's near you we just bought some gorgeous bird cages to use at my FSIL's house there. There were marked down 40% as part of a sale on that particular brands summer/spring items. They had a ton of sizes available.

I only came here to check out the drama, then realized I have something to add!

I hired mine from a wedding hire place, 1 week was something like $10. Really cheap. Then I added some cute silk flowers and a little sign (just printed on white paper then glued onto card) saying 'cards' in a nice font.

I wish I had a photo of it.

We requested everyone bring their gifts the day after (wedding was on an island), so no one even used the cage! Still looked cute though.
