DIY catering:heating

chelsie, on June 22, 2015 at 8:15 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 9

So I need suggestions or ideas. Planning to do our own food. Sticking with Italian. A couple pastas, chicken parm, salad and rolls. We're having cold apps for cocktail hour. But what I need ideas for is the heating part. The venue does a food service, where they provide the chaffers and 2 staff to tend to set up and clean up. But the food needs to arrive 30 mins before dinner hot. Any ideas on how I could accomplish that. Was thinking a couple oven roasters to reheat the food so I didn't need someone to run home during the wedding.

I don't agree with self-catering(food poisoning chance), but could you use crock pots? Not sure how that would work with pasta.

Yeah, I'd go with crock pots. It will make everything so much easier for you. (Don't listen to all the girls on here who are going to shout FOOD POISONING all over this thread.)

This is the challenge of self-catering. You won't have staff to prep the food, so you need to possibly pull family away during dinner. If you are reheating you need to make sure to reheat it to the proper temp, then keep it in the safe zone which would be hard if you are moving it to a different location. Also remember you need to keep cold foods cold.

FH's cousin got this on her (our?) bridal shower, it's a three-dish crock pot designed to keep stuff warm for buffet-style dinner.

If you want to do pasta/italian..is there any italian places that may cater cheap? Like an olive garden or similar establishment? That way you are not working on your wedding.

You might need to hire someone to do that, unless you want a family member or friend to have to leave the ceremony/not attend the ceremony to take care of it.

I had a 3 crock pot....because there is 3 they are smaller than your standard crock pot. It was not worth it. I returned it. It definitely would not help in feeding a lot of people.

Oh boy, here we go. Another reason why self-catering is not recommended. Please reconsider this and see if you can find someone (like was suggested above...Olive Garden or even Fazolis) to cater the biggest party of your life. You don't want to have to worry about this, I promise.

Ok #1 do you want your friends and family to have to work on your wedding day? They should be enjoying the time with you. #2 You're in Phoenix? what venue are you using that is allowing you to self cater?
