DIY Centerpiece HELP please!!

Karli, on July 5, 2013 at 10:44 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 10

My wedding is in a month and a half! I have a bunch of clear empty wine bottles and a lot of peacock feathers of different sizes that I want to have coming out of the wine bottles for centerpieces. What do you recommend to weigh the bottles down/decorate the bottles so the end of the feathers aren't showing thru the bottle? I've thought of sugar, sand, little pebbles, and spray painting the outside of the bottles... but I also don't know how to arrange the feathers so they'll stay inside the bottle without flopping all over the place! I need help, pretty please! I'm starting to panic! Thanks in advance! Smiley smile

Maybe you could use a hot glue gun, glue the bottom of the bottle and put it on a mirror or some kind of platform.

Here is an idea. Try using marbles. Clear ones or ones that are your wedding color. Im doing a similar centerpiece for my wedding but the wine bottles aren't

clear and I'm using flowers not feathers. I hope this will help you.

You could also use those gel beads that you can get at Michaels or Hobby Lobby. You add water and they puff up. They kind of look like marbles, but are soft.

Do marbles fit into the mouth of wine bottles?

First of all, I'd suggest that you spray paint the bottles with metallic spray paint. Use colors that coordinate with the feathers (one bottle teal, one bottle royal blue, etc.). Fill the bottles with some water. It's great for weight, and no one will see it because the bottles are painted. To keep your feathers standing upright, get some floral foam/styrofoam (not oasis, that's for real flowers that need to be hydrated). Cut a circular piece of the foam and insert a toothpick into the little styrofoam circle. Put a little glue around the edges of the foam (it may take you several tries to get the size right), and then carefully insert your foam into the neck of the bottle (it will be a small piece -- think of a cork). Now you've got a solid surface in which to insert your feathers. To get the correct angles (you don't want them all upright, but rather fanned out), add some floral wire to the stem of the feather to give youa bit of bend and give.

I would cut down the feather stem so they are not so tall.

Another idea is to get one Hydrangea per wine bottle, and put it in the bottle first - so the stem is in the bottle and the head outside of the bottle, flush to the top... then the hydrangea will act as a net of sorts to hold them where you want them. It also makes it look much fuller, and lets you use one color more. (IE: Blue, purple - whatever color you want to stand out.)

    Good luck!

Keep it simple and fill them by density. Fine sand first, then marbles, then pebbles... you can literally use any material.

The stacking of materials will create a really cool piece.

You can also stick taper candles into the top of the wine bottle. Some of our customers cut of the bottoms (lots of youtube videos how to do this) and stick votives inside the bottle.

If you have some vases or bowls, you could use those same marbles / sand / materials, add some water, and float some candles on top.

Don't fret, you're already started which is the hardest part!
