DIY chalkboard question!

Michelle, on June 24, 2014 at 8:36 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 9

I bought some old frames from thrift stores and I bought some of the spray chalkpaint. My question is, is there something I can spray on the chalk after I decorate it to keep is preserved a little longer?

I didn't make them, but I have chalkboard paint sprayed on the cabinets in my classroom. Spray several coats and it'll be fine. Now, if you want to preserve it forever, you can spray clear acrylic paint, but you won't be able to use it for anything else.

I want to do chalkboard signs too. I downloaded a chalkboard background online, but can't get the chalk font to download from dafont.com. I tried on my work computer. I'm too chicken to try it on my Mac (at home) cause I'm afraid of getting a virus. I'll figure something out eventually.

Use hairspray! I'm an artist, and during my art classes in college we used to spray hairspray on all of our finished work (chalk, pastels, charcoal, pencil). It helps to keep them from smearing. Is that what you are asking? How to keep the chalk writing from getting rubbed off?

And you could wash it off if you want to reuse the chalkboard again.

Hmmmm this is definitely a post for @OregonEmily - she got chalkboard signs printed and they looked AMAZING! I wouldn't have known they weren't actual chalkboards, and they were pretty cheap from what I remember.

If I were you, I would make signs that LOOK like chalkboards rather than signs that are actual chalkboards. When I first started planning I went and got a few chalkboards and now I am like- "Well what the hell am I supposed to do with these?" Because you can make signs that look like chalkboards which are super cute and wont smudge. Since you have the frames, just download a chalkboard backround and design a sign on that background. I tried to find OregaonEmily's that she recently did... It is SUPER cute and a great example!

Thanks for the shout outs Ashley and Future_Mrs_D.

I'll attach a pic of what I did for reference. But if you want to do a real chalkboard instead of printed, the hairspray sounds like a great idea!
