diy Customizations on my Dress

Michelle, on December 17, 2019 at 12:25 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 18
For any brides who have extra taste, but not extra budget, I want to share my experience customizing my wedding dress. It is still a work in progress, so I will post updates until the gown is finished.

I started with this dress from Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/listing/641492347/2018-romantic-a-line-shimmer-tulleI read the seller's reviews religiously for a month before ordering. Unfortunately there were no reviews for my dress, but the customer photos seemed to match the stock photos well, so I decided to take the chance and place my order.
When the dress came in, I was overall enamored with it, but there were some issues with it being not exactly like the photos. 1. The appliques were different (shinier and more embroidered looking- I liked them better than the stock photo appliques).diy Customizations on my Dress 1
2. The waist was a straight line and short on me- this would need to be fixed. 😡😡😡diy Customizations on my Dress 2

I also did not like how "bumpy" the sweetheart neckline was, so that would need to be tailored.
So my list of customizations is as follows:
1. Tailor the neckline2. Add crystal beading to the appliques 3. Add lace appliques to lengthen the waist4. Add lace trim to the hem/train5. Add mint green 3D flowers to the bodice and train6. Replace cheap rhinestones with Swarovski crystals 7. Add removable beaded straps

The first step was to tailor the neckline. This helped it to lay more flat on my chest.

Next, I added these crystal beads to the outer edges of the appliques for more definition and sparkle:diy Customizations on my Dress 5
I had purchased some appliques to add to the waist to make it more flattering: diy Customizations on my Dress 6

I had to remove some appliques from the tulle skirt, which was pretty scary, but I managed to not create any holes or snags. 😁diy Customizations on my Dress 7

It looks really good so far! Great job! It's definitely a job I would be terrified to do.

Next, I reattached the little cascading appliques near the waist.
I also wanted more detail on the hem, so I bought these very long appliques to attach:

I also dedicated almost a whole day to painting these darn flowers (if I never see a silk flower again, it will be too soon):diy Customizations on my Dress 10
I still have to add more flowers, but here is the hem with added lace trim:diy Customizations on my Dress 11

You did a great job. Even though you had a less than satisfactory experience, it great that you have the skills to fix this. You definitely took the dress to a new a level. The fit is so much better and the small details are great, you dress is truly one of a kind.

    Very cool, thanks for sharing!

I think I would have been pretty upset if the dress I got had a straight waist and was pictured with a more subtle transition, but you kept your cool and fixed it beautifully!

So far I'm not DIYing anything for my wedding but have thought of adding lace appliques to shoes to make them custom and really mine. This is inspiring!

Man, I was pretty irked at first, but considering that the price was a fraction of the cost of any other wedding dresses I liked, I got over it pretty quickly lol!

Also, I plan on adding appliques to my shoes too! Definitely post pics when you do 😁
