DIY disasters...let's hear them!

Penelope, on March 7, 2017 at 1:44 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 40

My mom and I are planting wild flowers in her garden spot for the wedding and I am anticipating beautiful flowers and a special meaning after a magical time spent with my mom as we bring life to my flowers! And cue disaster...I have a back up plan and $ in place for this and wanted to hear some of your diy disaster stories and how you handled them.

My only disaster was thinking that DIY would be cheaper than paying to rent decor.

You would think but not so much? Then add the time you put in...

I am also growing something for my wedding day--- white pumpkins, large and small. But if they don't work out I will either buy or scratch them altogether!

I have had at least two couples who planned on growing their own flowers. Thank god I have florists on speed dial. I would need four hands to count the amount of cousins, fathers and best friends we've covered for at the ceremonies they were supposed to perform.

Then there is DIY music. Don't make me go there.

    Ouch!

I'm not a diy-er but figured if the flowers are a fail, the time and story will last.

I attempted very few DIY projects, because I'm fully aware of my lack of artistic ability Smiley smile However - I did attempt to stain and initial bridesmaid boxes that were kind of a disaster. The forums helped me through my fiasco over the course of 3 posts!! I bought the wrong color wood stain so my sister got the box with the black bottom Smiley smile

I also did my mirrored seating chart by hand because I ran out of time to have someone else do it. It took a veryyyy long time and I forgot an entire table and had to add it in at the very last minute!

Bought a bunch of plain mini clothes pins for our seating chart and was going to spray them with glitter spray, well the spray was just not working so now I have mod podge and hand glittered over 150 tiny clothes pins. Added a lot of extra time, but in the end have to spend any more money on an alternative since I still had modge podge and glitter from another project.

3 weeks ago I thought I was spraying glitter on my Mr & Mrs sign. Complete duh moment on my end. It's a spray paint! I had no windows up & no fan on. I was in my dining room. Not only did I get glitter everywhere but I was high as a kite! Good thing FH was home and yelled at me to open the windows and stop spray painting in the house. I couldn't stop giggling....not my brightest moment.

Pic was after I got moved outside...

I tried to plant Dahlias for my sister's wedding a few years ago -- Not ONE stinking bloom. Good thing she wasn't relying on those for her big day, but we tried.

My DIY disaster after looking for red satin shoes in every mall in the New England area and failing, I thought it'd be easy to dye white shoes red myself b/c I saw tutorials on YouTube. HA!!! I practiced on a cheap pair and it was such a disaster. I'm still scrubbing red off the floors.

I plan to DIY my flowers by ordering them online to be shipped her bull. If something goes wrong I've mapped out every grocery store/Trader Joe's nearby to pick up last minute leather leaf and simple flowers to save the day 0__0

Pinterest expectation vs reality right here. I thought these driftwood sailboats would be easy! I'm about ready to use them as firewood.

I'm keeping the DIY projects to a minimum. Though, it certainly helps that I won't need very much decor so it all won't be too expensive. I'm predicting spending maybe $200-$300 altogether, if that. I don't currently have any disasters but Leah's story reminds me to be extra careful with my hot glue gun when making book paper flowers.

I thought that making DIY wooden table number blocks would be easy. Maybe if we owned our own tools it would have been. One 2x4 was cheap but then there was the cutting and the sanding and the staining and the stenciling. I think they turned out well, but hot damn, it was a lot of work for table numbers...

@KDoubleU - I have a little sailboat like that I picked up for about $3.00 on sale at hobby lobby or big lots? I can't remember which because they are right next door to each other - but you might look into either of those to find suitable replacements.

@Tiffany - I love that you are doing a survey regarding decor preferences - so fun!

I feel a little guilty for laughing at some of these. I have a lot of Pinterest fails under my belt...wedding DIY's are being kept to a minimum.

I was going to DIY centerpieces. I was happy with how my mock up turned out (especially after some advice from @centerpieces), but in the end I said "Eff it. I'm already tired and don't want to worry about this on the day of. I'l just have my florist do it." So much happier. Instead I'm going to use the candle holders we made out of birchwood on the fireplace mantle. Cuts down the number I have to make and it's less set up.
