DIY dye table linens and napkins

Amanda, on October 29, 2016 at 12:49 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 11

This might be a stretch on here but I can't find any forums elsewhere that address my dilemma. So I'm struggling to find 'gray' table linens that match in color in different sizes and that aren't eating away at my budget. I've already looked into renting the linens and it's roughly $3-$5 more per cloth to rent than to buy. So a friend suggested that I look into buying plain white table linens and cloth napkins and then dyeing them my desired color.

Most of what I've been able to find are 100% polyester and next to no polyester/cotton blends. From what I've read online, since polyester is a synthetic fiber; it won't hold traditional dyes. I found that RIT has a dye specifically for polyester, but I was wondering if any of you DIY brides had tried your hand at dyeing linens for your wedding OR just in general with clothing or something else??

I have a good bit of time to play around with this but now I'm just impatient to experiment Smiley smile

I just dyed a headband for Halloween that was polyester. I used the dye that was specific for polyester. It worked well but you need to experiment with it a little bit. The recommended boiling the water and doing it stove top which worked alot better then just the regular dye. You could try it and see where it goes from there. The dye was powder and was about 5 dollars at Joann Fabrics. Good luck

I would buy fabric in the color you want and take it to get made into what you need.

I have never had luck with dying being perfectly even.

    Big fat nope.

Do you craft at all now?

Do you already work with dyes? Do you have large enough pots to accommodate an the fabric? And enough space to dry/lay them out?

Are you willing to iron and fold them all?

Are you willing to suck up several weekends for this project?

If the answer is no to more than once if those questions just skip it. It is 100% not worth it. You're paying for the convenience of not having to do this yourself not the cost of materials.

This is not the simple cut and dried (pun intended) project you think it is. Dying polyester is NOT that simple, and it is very likely the dye will still run even after it's been set and after using dye intended for polyester. Can you imagine how angry a guest would be if your tablecloths ruined their dress clothes, or your napkins left gray smears on their face or hands?

What about white or ivory linens and using a gray overlay, like in a chiffon fabric, so it incorporates your colors at a much lower cost? Then if you choose to buy, you're only buying the overlays, and you'll have a LOT less labor in ironing and cleaning them than you would all the linens.

Agree with @MNA, you'll probably save yourself a headache if you do white/ivory and then decorate in gray.

Have you tried cvlinens.com? They have a lot of different colors. I just looked and they have silver (idk if that is the right color you want) but they are pretty well priced. Cheaper than renting. I plan on buying mine from there.

I would definitely do white with gray table runners or a chiffon overlay like @MNA suggested. It's way too much of headache to be worth it. And if you play too matchy matchy with your colors, you can end up looking like you decorated for a sports team gala.

I agree w/the others who say no. What are you going to do with all those tablecloths & napkins after the wedding is over? What are your other colors? Can you go with another color and decorate with gray stuff?
