DIY Faux Mercury Glass Question

JoRocka, on May 20, 2016 at 9:09 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 20

Alright ladies- I'm tackling mercury glass this weekend- but my question is- they say do it on the inside of the vase- but then you can't put water in there... because I guess it'll ruin the paint?

Has anyone done this and tried to seal it with something like Modge Podge?

You can use clear acrylic spray paint or a clear sealant. Most craft stores will carry them.

I actually just did it on the outside, because the bottle openings were too small. I was happy with how it turned out.

I was considering them on the outside to actually- I know it can be done- they don't flake off at all? was concerned about that.

Inside of the vase looks nicer, but I did it on the outside as well since I was going to have water and flowers in them.

Jo, I'm planning to do the same thing and was thinking the paint would be better off outside since I'll have water inside. Paleo, those are beautiful, you did a great job!

Jo- don't use mod podge!!! Water turns it to slime if it soaks long enough!! I had an etsy store for a long time and that's how I got the mod podge out of my brushes- I'd soak them in water. It came right off!

@Elizabeth- good to know- I see they have a water proof one- but I think I'm going to get the clear krylon polyurethane spray one- plus spray- how easy is that!!!

I'm going to hit up the thrift store on the way home from the DMV today- and see what I can find for vases and shit.

I agree with a clear sealant spray. I painted glitter on the bottom of my vases and sprayed it with this and it worked perfect. Those are going to look gorgeous JoRocka!!!

Um yes. Because pictures. And sharing! Of course I'll be posting! My coworker is a huge thrift store hunter, so she said she would keep an eye out for the tall candlestick situation. I haven't found any so that's the next big hunting hurdle!
