diy flower arrangements/bouquets

Maria, on January 11, 2018 at 9:05 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 20
Hi guys!
My question is is anyone planning on ordering flowers from Sam’s Club or Costco and having them delivered a few days before your wedding to make your own arrangements?
The idea of saving a lot of money on flowers that will just be thrown away after the wedding sounds very appealing to me - the wedding is going to be in a barn so I was going to use a lot of greenery, a few white roses in each center piece and each bridesmaid bouquet.
Contemplated maybe getting my bouquet done at an actual florist bc I want to preserve it afterwards.
My biggest concern is having to keep flowers alive a few days before the wedding, or having the price really not be that much cheaper than going through a florist. (Haven’t really done any pricing around yet). I would have 2 of my bridesmaids put it all together so I wouldn’t have to worry about it so I’m not worried about time. Thank you!!! Smiley smile

I think that's what we're doing...my wedding planner is picking up some flowers the night before and making some very simple bouquets.

I recommend calling Costco and ordering through their floral department. I did centerpieces of hydrangeas and rises for a wedding in April and it turned out beautifully. The floral rep can over order flowers when ordering through the store rather than online. That way when you go to pick them up you can pick and choose which bunches are the nicest...and they generally give you the buckets. I think I spent about $200 or so and was able to make about 8 centerpieces.
    Here are some pics.

Keep the flowers refrigerated if you can, and spray the petals with a little bit of water. It will keep them alive and fresh. (My parents used to own a flower shop) Also, I just put together bouquets for my friends wedding and the flowers were from Sam's club, just be sure to check the flowers before you head home. Half of her flowers were dead and we ended up scrambling to buy flowers from other vendors. It may have just been a fluke but be careful! Good luck!

Girl I just had two florists quote me $1000-$1500 on flowers. I have the money to spend on them, but it just pains me to do that. I don't remember the flowers from ANY wedding I have ever been to. So I found these yesterday. My reception space is going to be dimly lit, so I'm going artificial, and I think they look just as beautiful. I also don't have to stress about flowers wilting or not looking how I want. There are some amazing artificial flowers out there these days. With these I can do 20 of them for under $200!!! However, my ceremony flowers will all be real.

Not from sams club or costco, but we are arranging our own. we're ordering our flowers from a wholesaler in STL that sells at wholesale prices to the public.

they actually offered, for a small fee, to keep our flowers there so we can pick them up day of after we arrange them because i wanted to do it myself. i love flowers and our wedding is essentially "vintage garden," but we're also on a tight budget an i have confidence in myself that i can do this. mom and i have done it for weddings/events before so i know we can do it again for mine, since what i want is mostly greens and all in season. in terms of keeping them yourselves i would definitely do what someone recommended - go in and ask if you can order them thru the store and then pick the ones you want and a lot of times they will give you the buckets. just keep them cold and hydrated and they'll be fine.

I'm thinking of ordering bulk flowers from Costco and DIYing bouquets and centerpieces...but I'm starting to worry that fridge space might be an issue. Our Costco also offers wedding packages (v. reasonable $200-$400) where they create the bouquets, bouts, and corsages for you, but I think they still deliver them a few days early (meaning you still need to store them in your fridge). I've read that in order to keep them fresh in the fridge, you should spritz them with water like Ashley said. For boutonnieres, because they have much less stem once they're cut, I've read that you should spritz with water, then put 1-2 in a ziploc bag and blow some air into it before sealing (so that the bag doens't crush the blooms). Supposedly doing that creates and even more humid environment to keep them alive until the wedding.

TY so much for that info - I had no idea Costco did wedding packages and I love the boutonniere tip, would have never thought they needed special care. We are having a smaller wedding...maybe 15 big mason jars of flowers, 6 bouquets and then mine, and boutonnieres..so hopefully it will all fit into 1 fridge. My one bridesmaid lives in my backyard and I was thinking of having her empty their beer fridge to make room for the flowers!

Omgosh thank you so much! You just decreased my anxiety by a ton haha. A lot of people are telling me Costco is the way to go - I am going to most definitely refrigerate and spray with water, great tips!

I didn't think I would either, but when I saw those my mind was totally changed! I got these at Michael's. They have several pre-made bouquets right now. I really like these too because the stems even look real!

Costco usually has great flower also if you have a Trader Joes in your area I like to use them as well. If you have time sometimes hardware stores have a good deal on greenery as well.

Harolds Wholesale Florist in STL! They're actually on "Floral Row" downtown - we walked right in and were able to see so much of their stock! You order by the bunch/stem and they'll help you keep the flowers too, no matter if they arrange them or you do. Theyre amazing! Our flowers are only costing us 500!

I was in two weddings where they purchased the flowers from Sam's Club and made all their own flower arrangements. For both of them I believe they received them either two days or the day before. There wasn't really any issues with the flowers wilting during that time but you do need to have a cool place to keep them and some water. Neither of them kept them in a fridge but they did have them in the cool basement or garage.

One of the wedding's was my mothers and I had no issues doing her flowers (she had hydrangea's and they seem to hold up well), we had them all made up before the rehearsal dinner and be sure to have time planned for them. They came out wonderfully.

Now one of my Best Friends from college did the same sort of idea, to this day I want to say that night is on my list of most stressful experiences. My friend lives in California and all of her Bridesmaids lived in Ohio, so we flew over a couple days before the wedding. Before the rehearsal dinner we went grocery shopping and decorate the reception area. After the rehearsal dinner, the bride asked us to make cookies, do a trial run of her makeup and hair, and make the flowers. We got home later than planned from the rehearsal dinner, and found out we were missing a key ingredient for the cookies so some had to go to the store, I ended up on cookie duty since I worked in a bakery. The trial for hair went horribly because none of us were hair dressers and she had unrealistic goals (big bouncy curls with shorter than shoulder length hair), we kept trying other styles but she wasn't pleased with any of them. The flowers had to be trimmed and arranged, luckily one of the groomsmen was a florist's son. But even still the flowers were the most time consuming part. We were up til 3:00AM making those flowers for her wedding while we let her sleep. Then to make it to the ceremony location on time we had to be up at 5:00AM to start getting ready. That day I decided I would never do that to my bridesmaids. So now I am doing paper flowers that will be made well in advance.

I have seen them work well but don't do what my friend did make sure you have more than enough time to make them set aside.
