DIY flowers

FutureMrs.Cash, on January 4, 2016 at 11:33 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 6

Hello everyone! I will be getting married this June. We would like a simple, yet pretty wedding. I've read posts and articles about DIY flower arrangements. I'm interested in buying bulk at costco and arranging them with bridesmaids and family a few days before the wedding. Has anyone done something similar? If so, what advice would you have for developing a design and ensuring enough flowers are ordered?

A friend of mine ordered 300 white and pink daisies, all but 20 went into her bouquet, along with 4 bridesmaids bouquets, parents corsage pins, and 5 went to the groom and groomsmen, and the 15 left over went on the cake table. She didn't put any as centerpieces.

She did a mock up for the bouquets using fake flowers in the same size(she made only one bouquet) until she reached what she felt was the right look.

She ordered the 50 more than what she expected to use, in case of broken stems(from us). We destroyed about 15-20 while trying to wire them.

Since we were using such top heavy flowers we stuck medium weight floral wire through the stems to keep the flower heads from falling/wilting.

We made everything the day before, and were fortunate enough to be able to store them all in the venues cooler until the next day.

Good luck, it took 3 of us 4 hours.

Would you be using fake or real flowers? I'd be worried about real flowers wilting, but I've never done flower arrangements so I don't really know what I'm talking about Smiley smile

Here's some posts from other brides who have bought flowers in bulk for their weddings:

Try bloominous.com - we're using them for our own wedding. It's still DIY, but without the guesswork for quantities. They give you everything you need: floral tape, ribbons, pins, vases, etc. all included in the package. We're working with one of their designers and customizing one of their packages. Great price!

This is all very helpful! Thank you! I would like to stick with real flowers as much as possible. I will check out those links to get more ideas.

Fiftyflowers.com is a good company to purchase bulk flowers from. Depending on the flower it may take 2 or more days to open. Hydrangeas are water hogs and need to constantly be in water and away from heat or they wilt quickly. When you get the flowers you will have to cut each stem and place them in water. I use 5 gallon buckets. If you do not have flower arranging experience keep it simple. As far as knowing how many flowers to order. You can go to a local florist or grocery store and buy flowers and practice until you get the look you want then simply count the flowers. Fiftyflowers.com will help you with flower count also. You will be arranging them the day before your wedding not a couple of days out. If your order 300 stems of flowers that is 300 stems that will need to be cut and placed in water. I am planning on purchasing 300 to 600 stems of flowers but my fiance and I have previous bulk flower experience. I am simply placing flowers in vases no fancy arrangements. I have 3 hours the day of the wedding with a team of 4 people. I am not doing a floral bouquet, corsages, or bouts. Good Luck!!!!

I used Sam's Club flowers and it worked well. They arrived Wednesday and I arranged them on Thursday for my Saturday wedding. I only did my own centerpieces because I was too nervous to do bouquets and altar arrangements. One of the major pieces is that someone has to be home when the flowers are delivered in order to sign for them and put them in water immediately. It really didn't take much time - I spent about 4 hours on Wednesday dethorning roses and putting everything in water, and about 4 hours on Thursday actually making the arrangements. That was for 20 centerpieces. You would also need to make sure you have a way to transport everything to the venue.
