DIY gift registry - is it possible?

Lauren, on September 10, 2013 at 1:11 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 7

I don't like the way gift registries work. The guests have to buy the particular item at that particular store, which may not be in their city; or, the item may be on sale at a different store that week, etc. The convenient thing though is that it take items off as guests purchase them so there aren't duplicates.

So... I am trying to brainstorm how to make a gift registry that folks can check off themselves, so they can choose where they want to buy it. I know that's what I would have liked when shopping for someone else's wedding.

Any ideas on how I could make this work efficiently? Thanks for any thoughts! Smiley smile

Welcome to WW, Lauren! Amazon has registries that kinda work like that. You can add anything form Amazon or many other stores to your list and guests can either buy directly off the registry or they can buy it somewhere else and mark on the registry that they've bought it elsewhere (though honestly, I don't know how well guests would remember to do this.)

Because it's an online store, Amazon is really a great option. Bed, Bath and Beyond is another good one, as guests can constantly use their coupons. The key is to give a variety -- if you choose big, popular places and different price points, guests should have no issue with finding items they want to get you at a price they're comfortable with. I've never been invited to a wedding with a registry for a store that WASN'T in my city (Target, BB&B, Walmart) or online.

I hope you'll stick around and update that avatar (the rings) to ANY unique picture, even from Google, we can remember you by! The sticky at the top tells you how!

This is not apart of your topic but I love the way Just Reenski spoke just now....

Okay back on track I would do Amazon also....I'm doing Target since I love it and all my family can purchase it online and then have it sent directly to me. But I love the above suggestion.

I agree with Reenski that Amazon sounds like the best way to achieve what you're trying to do. Most of my gifts have been purchased online so it really wasn't an issue if there wasn't a Williiams Sonoma nearby.

We did Amazon, and it is great! You download a little app/link and then you can add things from other sites in addition to everything on Amazon. And since you get free shipping on most things, it's great. People can just ship things to us directly without worrying about it. We've gotten a lot of good feedback for our soon-to-be-guests.

We loved depositagift.com you can completely customize your registry for anything you want. what's nice is that you can break up big ticket items into smaller parts so that people can contribute. think: furniture, home down payment, honeymoon, etc. they are a weddingwire partner which is how we discovered them. the customer service is unbelievable.
