diy Hair and Makeup

Gracey, on July 7, 2021 at 11:50 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 8

I want to look perfectly natural on my wedding day and not a caked Barbie. My hair is also flatter than flat so I don't see the use in paying to get my hair done when it will be flat before the ceremony even starts. Therefore, I was thinking of having my bridesmaids and myself do our hair and makeup ourselves and look natural. Is that a bad idea? What do you think?

It's completely up to you whether or not you do your own hair and makeup or hire a vendor. And your bridesmaids will also be find doing their own. If they prefer to have a professional service, they can do that on their own before they arrive at your venue.

That said, there's a lot of room in between "perfectly natural" and "caked Barbie" for professional makeup, so if you are worried about doing your own makeup, you could look for a makeup artist whose style suits yours.

That is definitely up to you, however there are many MUA that are able to give natural looks as well - everything isn't "caked up". Also, some bridesmaids may opt to get theirs professionally done but that can be at their own expense

I also don't want to look "caked up" - and will be working with a MUA that is going to give me a natural look- but still look glam! I would recommend doing the same - only because MUA tend to use products that will last all day/night/thru sweat (and maybe tears) haha.

As for your hair- will you just have it down and straight? or were you planning on styling it yourself? I feel like I would also want someone to do it for me - just because it's the day of and I would hate to mess up my own hair or not have it the way I envisioned it. I'm going with a beach curls look - and I can do them myself, but they don't always come out the way I want them to - therefore I'd want a professional who can get it right it every time do it

I agree with the others, there is a great range of services between caked on and makeup free. Many makeup artists specialize in 'no-makeup makeup', so you don't necessarily have to go full instagram influencer if that's not your vibe.

Also, a good hair stylist will be able to work with even the flattest of hair. Both of your reasons for not hiring a professional is why you have a trial beforehand.

That said, there is absolutely nothing wrong with doing your own hair and makeup if you are confident with your skills and like the way you can make yourself look for a major event.

One thing to be aware of is that professional photos can make you look washed out our under-done, which is often why slightly heavier makeup is used. The other thing is, you might be stressed or anxious on the morning of your wedding, so having someone else do your makeup can be a relaxing/soothing experience.

I also thought of skimping on MUA and professional hair help, since I wanted to remain as 'natural' as possible and I usually dont wear make up at all, however...I went and did trials to see what they can do and If I'd be ok with it, and I have to say Im SO EXCITED to have my hair and makeup done!! They each did a great job, and its made me realize that this is STILL MY WEDDING DAY and even tho I am going low key, i don't have to look like I normally do...(hair in bun and sweat pants!!) Its an occasion to get dressed up and feel really pretty. I'd vote for at least looking into a trial and see what you think. Be completely honest with them and tell them exactly what you want and maybe you will be pleasantly surprised like me! Splurge on yourself and your FH...you're worth it!!!

Results of make up trial. I'm very happy with it after a couple of corrections and toning down a bit on the eyelashes. My MUA was wonderful and listened to what I wanted and I didn't feel "caked up".

I did my own makeup and a friend helped me with my hair. I have pretty fine hair that tends to be flat but its amazing what some good products and styling techniques can do. I used volumizing shampoo and conditioner, a texturizing mousse, dry shampoo applied at my roots and then tossed my hair upside down, and my friend did some light teasing as well.

I had my hair professionally done for our elopement and then done by my friend for our wedding celebration and I don't think you can tell which was which. If you have friends to help you practice, you can absolutely perfect and nail a DIY makeup and hairstyle look for your wedding.

I have found that most of the makeup artists in my area tend to go over the top with makeup and make people look like completely different people. And while some may like that, I am in the same group as you where I would like to look like myself on my wedding day! I am good at makeup and honestly a bit of a control freak, so I'm doing my makeup and having a friend do my hair. I think its' totally up to you, but coming from a bride with the same point of view I am looking forward to doing my own!
