diy Invitations -- How possible is it?

Lydia, on January 26, 2021 at 3:18 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 13

Hello! I'm looking for any advice on making DIY invites that still look nice but don't cost a ton of money to make. I'm probably going to have to use a Copy-and-Print store or service--I recognize that--but is there any way to customize or design these well without breaking the bank over it?

We bought a template from Etsy for our programs and then had them printed at Office Depot. They have some pretty inexpensive program templates/PDFs that you could purchase then print yourself. But you'd have to purchase envelopes to mail as well.

Have you tried YouTube? I went on there to see how to assemble my invitations & there was a ton of videos on how to make your own invitations.

I would recommend looking for a template you like online. Etsy has a ton of great looking templates comparable to invitation suites you would buy from Minted, Zola, etc., and they're not expensive at all. They send you a file where you can customize the template as you please and you can print it on cardstock yourself.

I did my own invitations. Spent about $100 total on stationary (including postage!), and had upgraded paper and pocket envelopes. I did the details card in Microsoft Word and the rehearsal dinner on Canva.
I found a free template on google for the invites/RSVP/STD and printed at Staples.
It wasn’t hard but it was a bit time consuming. diy Invitations -- How possible is it? 1

Totally possible! I do recommend spending money on printing.

You can find free wedding templates on Canva

I printed my invitations from Vista Print, and I splurged on the fancy linen paper, but you could easily get away with nice heavy cardstock. You can print your own too! I'm just not that good with a printer, so in my experience, a print shop just comes out a little more professional and well-worth my money.

I created my own Save The Dates using different templates (like Zazzle) and then printed them through Costco! Very inexpensive. I'm trying to decide on the invitations if I want to do something similar. I just know I want them a little nicer. I did search stores like Michael's and they have different style invitations and then you just create and print what you want on them.

The below are from Michael's, they come in sets of 30 and are $39.99 per pack.

If you have any friends who are also graphic designers, they may have the skills and resources to help you design your own. And pay or gift something nice as payment. My MOH is a graphic designer and used Illustrator to design my invites. She had some floral brushes that she used on mine. I didn’t like her fonts and chose to pay for a new font. After all was done, It when onto the printing service which is where majority of the cost is.

You can also print directly from Canva and they will ship them to you! That's what I did and their paper quality is amazing and it took less than a week! Invites were 50 cents each. You have the option to add envelopes to your order for $8 but I ordered mine off Amazon.

Michaels sells DIY invitation kits for about $40 it doesn’t get much cheaper than that you use your own home printer to print them out. Another alternative is to get them on Vista print where you can get your invitations for about $1.69 apiece and even if you’re inviting 100 people you will only need 50 invitations because most people come in couples

Hey Lydia! Etsy has some great options for download and print. You can print them at staples, fed ex, paper source, etc. If you print them at home, make sure to buy thick paper (100 lb cover or heavier) and a printer that can handle that paper. Minted has super affordable and beautiful options, or you can get quotes for custom invites to see if the cost is really that different than DIY. I’m a graphic designer, so I’m designing and printing my own invites.
