DIY popcorn bar

Maureen, on September 11, 2013 at 3:45 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 15

So I wanted to do a late night snack for my guests. Our cocktail hour starts at 5pm, dinner at 6pm, then our reception goes until midnight.

I looked into chocolate fountains but was blown away by the price and I have heard that they are very messy. So I thought what about a popcorn bar! I would do a bunch of different types of toppings from chocolate sauce, carmal sauce, seasoned salts, M&M's, etc.

My question, do I pop the popcorn ahead of time? Will it go stale?? Do I pop it there at the wedding? I will not be have an attendant at the station so I'm not sure how to go about doing this.

Our grocery stores here have gigantic bags that you can buy for fairly cheap (like a five-foot-tall bag is around $30). But I don't know that I'd do a snack bar that you don't have someone to set up/keep an eye on.

I would go for the prepopped too, but I'd go light on the syrupy toppings. When we used to do this at my catering company, the drippy stuff didn't go over as well as the herb salts, Old Bay, flavored oils.

    Love it!

I did a pop corn bar a couple months ago for a family celebration less than 30 people I found several recipes at Pinterest, I tried the sweet popcorn recipe that requires 30 min oven time, and it was a big hassle, specially when you are doing 9 flavors . Other recipes can be more easy but the taste and texture after a couple days are not suitable for a wedding. About a pop corn machine, depends of the venue, certainly you need an operator and a rental machine, without mention the strong odor.

As previously mentioned, unless you have someone monitoring, I would stay away from the syrups/sauces since it could get messy. If your heart is set on those, could you predrizzle some?

We are doing a popcorn bar and on found some cute ideas online with using salt shakers for a wide variety of sprinkle toppings. Getting popcorn from grocery store.

I think i'm going to order the pop corn through that company that Maggie suggested. That way, we won't have to worry about someone sitting there and making popcorn and the whole room smelling like popcorn all night long :l

    Thanks ladies!

We made little tags that said "thanks for popping by!" And everyone LOVED them!

I would try and rent a popcorn stand. It would be super fresh and would look great with the whole "popcorn bar" theme.

We had a popcorn bar, but we bought it prepackaged. I bought 5 different flavors from Popcornopolis. They sell it every year at our Costco for a fraction of the price. It lasts one year (we bought it a few weeks before). I didn't think to get toppings (duh). The popcorns were already sweetened/flavored though (caramel, chocolate, cheese, kettle, etc). We bought little popcorn boxes and stamped them with a custom stamp from Etsy. I don't have many pictures of it. The photographers started taking pictures before the ceremony flowers (already wilted unfortunately) were placed on the table. (The venue provided the other random decor - I brought the chafing dishes, bowls, scoops, and ID tags). My DOC refilled them as needed throughout the night. It was super popular (and much cheaper than a late night snack)!

I think that's an awesome idea and either way DYI or through a company the guests will enjoy it but much less hassle for you to hire a company.

Ms. M, we wanted to do the Popcornopolis stuff from Costco and our store didn't have it in stock yet- apparently it's a seasonal item? Just a heads up to OP to check with your Costco before you think it's going to be there and you scour two different Costcos and then have a meltdown and cry in a Costco aisle because you can't find it. Oh wait, that was me Smiley smile
