diy Real Flowers for a "destination" Wedding?

Imani, on May 2, 2019 at 10:58 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 8

Hi everyone!

My wedding day is still a little ways off (3/29/20) and I have just secured my venue and dress (YAY! It's really happening!). Me and FH live in the DC Area but are getting married in my hometown, Kansas City, MO. I want to cut costs on floral but I still want to use fresh flowers if at all possible. My issue is I am not sure if I'll realistically be able to buy wholesale flowers and actually make the type of bouquets and centerpieces I would love to have. Also, I'll obviously have to get them done once I get to town a few days before the wedding. What are everyone's thoughts on DIY fresh flowers? Is it really that hard to pull them off?

Definitely possible with lots of prep and planning. I would make sure to have all of your supplies ready and a detailed timeline of when your flowers will arrive, how long each type of flower can be out of water, etc.

I’d say this kind of depends where you’re staying.
I did my own fresh flowers and while the labor wasn’t too bad, it was time consuming and a big mess haha , and a good bit of supplies needed (buckets!!)...and they also need to be delivered on the ideal flower schedule which may or may not align with your travels. So I’d say, if you’re staying at a hotel, I’d call it a bad idea. If you’re staying at a family home, and they’re willing to shoulder a little bit of the burden, then it’s possible. ...my parents’ basement became my flower shop 🤣. We were from out of town having a wedding in my hometown too. I ordered my flowers for Thursday figuring we’d travel Wednesday night, but the flower company reached out and said at least one of the types of flowers that I was ordering really does best with a little more recovery time after shipping so they recommended I have those ones arrive Wednesday. I’m sure it would’ve ended up fine if I vetoed their change and just had them all come Thursday, but my mom was around and willing to help, so I went for the Wednesday delivery for that particular batch. But, then of course, she had trim all the stems and get them in water ASAP beyond just accepting the delivery (thanks mom!). So really, I’d say this all depends on your home base .

I would look into farmer's markets if you can. A friend had a similar situation with her wedding and she got to town a few days early to scope places out before making our own bouquets.

Makes sense. That's what I figured. A lot of planning and a lot of help is key.

I can definitely ask my mom if she'd be willing to help out! I also have bridesmaids and MOHs that'd be willing to help I'm sure and they live in my hometown. So I'll just have to weigh my options. Thanks for the advice!

It's possible, but it depends on what you want. A teardrop bouquet is going to be much harder than hand tied, and tall centerpieces are more complicated than low ones. Buy some grocery store flowers and practice doing a mockup of everything you want to make, at home, leaving yourself enough time to hire a florist if you need to. You can also get a florist to do half of it, and do the other half DIY. Like get the florist to do the bouquets and boutonnieres, but DIY the centerpieces, or the opposite.

It's definitely doable. If you're worried about the actual putting together of the bouquets, I would do some practice runs before you travel. You can either use cheap, grocery store flowers, or you can even get some fake flowers to practice on. That way you can take them apart and reuse them as many times as it takes to get the look you want.
