DIY Reception Food

wp2014, on March 20, 2013 at 9:41 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 19

I am thinking of making the food for our reception myself, am I crazy? Some seem to think so. I'm planning a basic pasta bar for 150 people. Thoughts?

The last few days before a wedding are crazy. I would not take on feeding 150 ppl on top of

    everything else.

Honey its your day do what you feel. I will say being as though this is my second wedding and coming from a bride who diy her food for the first wedding for 150 people its best to pay someone to do it or get family because its a PIA and you are going to want to relax and have fun the night before your wedding.

It would depend on your venue. Most venues don't allow anyone to bring or cook in their kitchen without a food handler license. Some have done it though. I'm personally not doing it, I don't want to stress out or even think about doing it.

Good Luck! Hope it all works out.

To a certain extent you could do it yourself. But, 150 people is a lot to DIY and there are logistical details to think of. Do you have anyone who can help you? If you had three people you could count on to help that would make a big difference. You all could make the dishes two days before and keep them in your fridge (or freeze them and make a week before). It seems like a lot of work though, and I can imagine you being stressed the week of your wedding. If you could get some people to help make the food, or get a caterer or local business to make appetizers/sides/some of it, then it might lighten the burden on you. You will need to rent/buy buffet supplies like the heater things to keep food hot and stands for the trays. You will also have to figure out who will do drinks or how you will set them up since the caterer does that usually. (I am doing my drinks so maybe I could help you)

-Also, who will bring the dishes to the ceremony and set it up?

I think that it's a crazy thing to take on. 150 people eat a whole lot of food. Where are you going to keep it? Who will heat it, keep it hot, serve it and clean it up? I;ve got a great kitchen in my house but seriously not enough room for that kind of food.

    No! No! No!

Hire a caterer. Making food for 150 people is going to be beyond your capacity in so many ways.

It's doable if you have at 2 to 3 people that knows what they are doing, 150 is a lot of mouth to feed. I use to do catering when we were stationed overseas, and I still have my large pots and pans those are the things you will need, food processor, he will be your new BFF. We will do our own catering, it's just because I'm only feeding 50 people and I'm confident in my FH, FBIL, and bunch of friends. In your case like I said its doable but you will need good people to help you.

I vote no...to save costs, maybe recruit from a local culinary school if there is one?

Basic Pasta Bar is a good idea. We were going in that direction, but we changed the menu to be more what both of us would like. I was figuring the pasta because it would be easy. But I think what we decided on will be pretty easy as well. My day or not, I am such a party planner that even though we entertained the idea of catering, it wasn't what I wanted. So if you want to do it, then go for it!

Here is what we are having -

Tri Tip - Cooked the night before and sliced. Costco around here has the best deal for two of them.

Rotisserie Chicken - Also from Costco. Ordered ahead of time and picking up ( by a family member ) the day of

Baked Beans - From the can Smiley smile

Mom's Potato Salad - Everyone's favorite made the night before by my Mom. It tastes the best the next day any way.

    Green Salad

    Rolls

    Fruit/Veggie Trays

I agree with the others if you can enlist a few people to help you its totally doable. my self im doing diy catering and having my aunt and some cousins help with the prep and are also going to serve the food for the buffet. so I would say as long as you have other people to help go for it

I'm doing the DIY reception food with help from several friends and family members. So it's gonna be a piece of cake on my end. Thanks to wonderful friends and family. I've been to two of my nieces weddings with DIY reception foods and turned out great. That's why I decided to do it with my own wedding. Good luck
