DIY Seashell Bouquet?

Cassoccer15, on July 23, 2013 at 4:24 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 12

We are having a beach wedding--having said that, we have also decided on not having any flowers! Only seashells, sea glass, and starfish. I found a picture of a seashell bouquet that I fell in love with. I have started calling florists in the area and they are asking $300-350...and I am providing the seashells! So I have decided to hand make them!

Does anyone have any advice on how? I have found a set of directions that seems to make sense using floral wire, gluing it to the seashells, and pinning them into a styrofoam ball. Any suggestions on glue that will hold heavy seashells? Please help!

Search it in the WW search bar. There was a post this week showing a shell bouquet a bride completed and it looked great. For the life of me, I can't think of who it was.

Check offbeatbride.com, they might have a tutorial on doing it. And check the forums like Esposa said, I think I remember seeing a picture but can't remember who, either.

If push comes to shove, check Etsy. A quick glance found some that were under $200, so that's a possibility.

I did it and it wasn't so bad. I glued the shells to wire then placed and then I hot glued it on after.

Got a whole bag of mixed seashells at Bealls for $4.00.....3 starfish at dollar store.........bouquet turned out about 15"........did in a about an hour and EVERYONE loved it!!! it is now the centerpiece on our coffeetable in a vase filled with beachy smelling scents.

I did one for a friends wedding. I heavy glued it bc it had to travel from SC to Ohio then to the Virgin Islands. I used a styrofoam ball, a wooden dowl for the handle. I kind of stuck it in there to get it started and then put hot glue in there to make it stay. The next thing I did was hot glue all the shells to matchsticks. That's the name but without the match part on the end. I then poked all those in. I made sure to glue around it so it was extra secure. Because I was trying to cut down on some of the weight bc it was being shipped, in the little spaces I used tulle and hot glued it in there as a filler. I also added some peal bead from the floral section. I then wrapped the wooden handle in a ribbon. It turned out so pretty and didn't cost that much to make.

My only input is when you do the stryofoam ball - try and find a way to wrap it to hold the shape.

When I was contemplating doing my own bouquets, my grandmother who used to do floral arrangements said to make sure that the foam is "caged" in someway - the foam can begin to crumble from the stems/picks you use because of the weight and lack of moisture.

I don't know if I explained it well but here is an example of one I found on google:

I made my own seashell bouquet. I also made them for my bridesmaids. I took a styrófome ball, marked a place for my dowel rod, and just started hot glueing shells on it. I didnt use flowers pics or wiré, because it just added more weight. When i was satisfied with all of the shells, i took small pieces of ribbin and attached it with corsage pins so it appears to also have pearls on it. (i used hot glue to anchor the pins) I bored out the hole for my dowel rod because i was afraid it would crack my ball, then filled it with guess what? Yep, more hot glue! Lol after i was finished with it i got some sparkley craft paint i think the name was halogram? And painted each and every seashell with a tiny paint brush, so it made it sparkle! I'll try to upload some pics. I also added hanging ribbon to the bridesmaids around the hándle, just because?! Lol but, they are heavy!! Not gonna throw mine for fear of giving someone a concussion! Have fun! Eeew, i forgot, i wrapped my dowel rod with jute after it was set and guess what i used! Lol. I believ with all 4 bouquets i ended up using 4 bags of mini glue sticks - 40 to a bag! Smiley smile
