DIY Silhouette Cutter?

ShakespeareBride, on April 14, 2016 at 1:02 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 12

I am looking at trying to save some money in the long run and do most, if not all, the paper products myself for the wedding. Has anyone used or owned one of the silhouette cutters and if so which is the best for the price?

I love my silhouette! I have the Portrait which is the smallest and cheapest model. I was able to do a lot of stuff for the wedding with it but the Cameo would have been so much easier. If you only want to get the portrait, it can be done. I will be attaching some of my projects in a few minutes. Gotta go through my phone...

    1. Wedding count down I made for myself

    2. For fun project. Cut a map of the US and then cut pictures of DH and I in states we had visited (excuse the not-dried modge podge)

3.Ring bearer pillow (cut fabric in our monogram and hand stitched on pillow)

    4. Bridesmaid gifts: tote bags with quotes that made me think of each girl

    5. Corn hole boards. Used the silhouette to cut our dad's favorite baseball teams and then traced them onto the boards and painted

    6. Escort cards

Not sure which one I have and have never used it. Won't have time to learn either until July. That is cutting it too close to make my own stuff.

@Kimi - there is definitely a learning curve. I learned because I worked as an event coordinator but it definitely took me about 10 different projects to really learn what it can do and how to do it.

I got one for Christmas, and have sadly not had any time to set it up since...but I am so excited about having the time to work with it this summer. I've thought about learning how to use it to address envelopes, as I do have the pen set.

I did a lot of comparison between the Silhouette Cameo and a Cricut. I really felt like the Cameo was a better choice for me.

I have a Silhouette Cameo. I love it. I wish I had it when I was planning my wedding.

I've heard that the Cricut is easier to learn than the Silhouette and can cut more materials. I don't have either, but if I discovered them earlier in my wedding planning I definitely would have bought a Cricut.

I have a cricut (wish I had gotten the silhouette and am thinking about buying one instead). The only reason I want a silhouette over the cricut is because it has a couple of features I want and is a bit more advanced - Cricut is like an automatic car, Sil is like a manual car.

The cricut is super easy to learn if you are comfortable with computers and can learn quickly. There are limitations to both though and do not expect to be able to do everything with it. I will be using it to make some things for the wedding (mostly stencils to make the signs I want), but would never use either for all of my paper items unless I'm only doing like 10 of each thing. Invites are a pain, I tried to do them for my 8 year olds birthday party and ended up just printing them I got so frustrated and wasted so much paper. The pen/write feature is not fast or good enough (on either cricut or silhouette from what I've heard) to do large volume. Plus it would take forever to type each individual thing in and reload the paper, etc. What are you looking to do with it and I can tell you if I think it is worth it for you.
