DIY tent

Charlotte, on February 1, 2013 at 2:03 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 9

I love this site, now I am forever more convince I am having a backyard wedding, with an officiant, fiance will understand (he wanted a courthouse wedding instead), I will get him drunk tomorrow. Anyways, I am debating between using tulle or tarp (they almost cost the same) as a means of shading, I don't want to rent tents or gazebo, that will be a very big chunk of my budget. I am thinking of dressing the backyard with purple tulle, but I am also considering Texas heat in July (my wedding ceremony will be at 6:00 in the evening) I found some tarp at home depot, I'm debating which one to use. I wanted something like this...

I saw something really cool, and of course I cannot find it now. It was a beach ceremony and they held the tulle up with helium balloons and fishing line attached to the ground. It looked as if the tulle was just floating in the air. Pretty good idea Smiley smile

I saw that one, I'm just worried that Tx heat will pop the baloon, but that is really neat.

Charlotte, tulle won't filter the sun enough to shade people.

Tarps would have the eyelets around the edges for tying.

I would go w/ tulle. . . . lets some air move through it, and gives you a ton more color / design options! (And personally, when I see tarps, I think either camping or the 'not so nice' parts of town.)

Yeah, I like the look of tulle but agree with Nancy it won't create shade. You did say 6PM though so that should be good I think.

I'm a California girl don't know much about Texas

In TX you need shade for your guests. I know Walmart has a thing maybe called sun shade? It is in the garden center and you get it in rolls. Our friends put it on top of their pergola it really took down the heat.

All the ideas, here is what I'm thinking, white tarp, then I will decorate the ceilling with purple tulle and string lights, and same with the PVC pole that I will tie the tarp to.

Although this looks like a great idea, please be careful with a DIY tent. If the weather is bad or there is the slightest gust of wind it could fall over and hit someone. The last thing you want is a lawsuit because someone got hurt. Even professional tent companies have accidents, but they have hefty insurance just in case. And please don't think that your friends and family would never sue you, it could be a vendor or a guest. Trust me, it happens! At my company our bartenders aren't allowed to stand under any kind of tent or sturcture without the proper insurance. We had a tent fall on our bar last year, luckily no one was hurt but it could have been very bad.
