We have decided to save money and not hire a videographer. I still really wanted video of the wedding day so decided to go buy a video camera and we will do it ourselves. I am going to ask a few different people to help video the day for us, this also will bring in the personal touch. Does any brides have any advice or tips on doing their own videography? Thanks ladies!

We talked to eivans.com. It's is corporate and have lots of locations. They have a package about $1200. For 10 hrs of coverage cheapest I have found. You can also try thumbtack which is just individual vendors. The guy that made an offer wasn't that great. But was offering to film the wedding for $800 for a good review. I figured I could get the raw footage and my my own video edits. Thinking of going with eivans

Can you get a GoPro? That's what I'm doing- put it behind us in a tripod and get a video from that view.

PLEASE. Do not make your guests, friends, or family work on your wedding day. JFC.

UO but as a guest I would have no problem helping out a friend getting married (ETA by helping film certain parts of the wedding. I would say no to filming the whole day but pressing record for the ceremony and getting speeches is totally fine). Also asking does not equal forcing them to work. Fun fact no is a complete sentence if someone asks.

@OP We ended up hiring a pro for the ceremony only ($350) so no advice there. My brother has offered to video the first dance and speeches on my GoPro. I'll also have the GoPro set up in the getting ready room to get some footage there as well. As far as advice just make sure you go over how the camera works extensively with the person you're asking to press record. Depending on how long the battery life is you could ask one of the groomsmen or FH to press record right as they're heading up to the front.

We had one of the teens video with a go pro that we just purchased for the day. It came out in short segments but ultimately worked fine. He was happy to help/ be kept busy with a gaget.

As someone who majored in Communication, PLEASE DONT! Do you have several hundred dollars to buy decent linear editing software? Can your computer keep up with the demand the software will put on it? Do you know how to edit properly (meaning no jumpcuts and transitions added where needed)? do you have microphones? Do you have back up batteries and chargers?

Hire a film student who has access to the proper equipment. It will be great to add to their portfolio.

I did the videography for my older brothers wedding. Then again I also did the photography for him as well. I had my FH help me out with the video part while I took the pictures. The only downside I could think of for the whole thing was the fact that it was at an outdoor venue in a covered area so the sound quality wasn't the best. Just make sure you ask your attendants beforehand to make sure that they are alright with doing this first before and make sure that they know how to use the video camera well in advance. Maybe during your rehearsal have them test it out to make sure they have things down and know where they would need to stand to get the best shot for everything.

I would recommend a professional. You can do some did but don't be cheap on videographers.

Turns out everyone else in this thread was right. It didn’t turn out unfortunately.
We did a test for the rehearsal...we set it up on the balcony and you could see and hear perfectly. But on the day of our wedding, every one I had told about this forgot to hit record. My husband told me afterward that as soon as I got to the front he realized that no one hit record but obviously didn’t want to stop the wedding. There just is so much going on the day of that things get forgot and overlooked. I was pretty disappointed not to have any video footage from our wedding. It’s been 2.5 years now and I am still sad but it’s not as big of a deal.

I recommend trying to find someone in your price range before doing this option. And if you do end up doing this, do not have a high hopes for what will happen.
But good luck! And congratulations to you. At the end of the day, all that matters is your married.

Thank you so much for this response! I am so torn with photo/video. I definitely agree though, hiring someone to do it is once less thing to worry about on the wedding day. I appreciate your thoughtful response Smiley heart

My Future sister in law got married last year and asked me to video her wedding. I was a guest and videoed the ceremony and it was not a problem. I don't think its rude to ask guests to help out a little.
