DIY vs. TACKY

DiamondGrrl, on April 29, 2014 at 11:40 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 8

Has anyone else stressed about DIY's making the wedding look tacky? I worry about my vision not coming together and looking just plain "thrown together"! Part of the problem is the venue, we're having a boat wedding and I don't want it to look "tacky" because I can't afford Preston Bailey lol. I'm doing non-floral centerpieces (candles, rose petals, and table confetti) and ordering my table runners/cloths for the gift/cake/sweetheart tables. The images in my head look awesome but I'm beginning to worry that I'm just being biased.

Just do a mockup and post on here for opinions. These ladies always have good advice and ideas.

I've had some similar concerns as I'm doing a lot of DIY, mostly to save money. I'm hoping it will all come together. One thing I've seen looking tacky at a wedding that was DIY was some tulle hung over windows and down the stairs. They hadn't used enough so it looked worse than it not being there at all. I've tried to make sure that I have plenty of fabric to drape etc. so that it will hopefully look good without going overboard.

I've also made great use of EBay etc. to get little touches that look good but don't cost much. I won't really know how it's all going to look until we set it up the night before, so I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that I can pull something good together….

DIY can look great, or it can look tacky. It all depends. Post with a mockup, talk to people for ideas, and try to look at it from an unbiased standpoint.

I did several DIYs that I ended up not using because they weren't up to what I had in my head and ended up going with the one that I really loved that didn't look tacky - because some of the DIYs really did look like DIYs.

I ended up doing these for each table and they took forever to get them right.

I worry about this! The ideas in my head seem great but I'm worried about being able to execute them properly and have a cohesive look with everything! Thankfully my FMIL is great with this decor stuff! She's currently assisting with 2 wedding receptions and a retirement party so I will definitely be asking for her help haha

I agree with the others on here. If you have an idea try it. I wanted to make candles in mason jars for mine so I got a couple different size mason jars (luckily my mom had various sizes) and we bought a lb of wax and tried it. They turned out great, we learned we didn't need as large of a candle for the burn time we wanted and it took my fear of it away Smiley smile Needless to say, my mom and I will be making candles the weekend before my wedding (so the scent doesn't seperate). I am working on a burlap banner project which I plan on posting as soon as I can get it to work. First round didn't go so well but it was because I used a paint that was off white and it didn't show up very well on the burlap. I'm going for round 2 in the next couple weeks and will definitely post for opinions.

Thanks for all the wonderful advice. That centerpiece looks great CeCe!

I'm gonna stop the worrying UNTIL I at least do some mock-ups lol...stay tuned.

I do mock ups and compare to others I have seen. If it looks close I am ok if not it's back to the drawing board.
