Diying my veil...and adding to train!

Anie, on January 18, 2021 at 7:23 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 7

Does anyone have experience adding extra lace to their train? My dress is a big princess dress and has a beautiful train; however it doesn't have any sheer lace with applique that trails off and I just love how that looks. Am thinking of making it myself?? I can buy the tool and sew on applique and am thinking of having it attach onto the dress with buttons so it can be taken off before bustling the dress.

I'm not as worried about the veil, I feel like that will be easier of the two adventures.

Do you really want that stress? Your time and sanity are money too. A seamstress may be a better option

That's a good point. I have 4 months until the wedding and am still waiting to do my first fitting, so I'll definitely mention it to my seamstress when it finally arrives. I'm not a super stressful person, and I think it would even be fun.

Worst comes to worst, if I can't figure out the added train, I will just nix it. My sister-in-law made her own veil though and it came out beautiful! I would want a really long one and they are usually VERY expensive, so that part I definitely do want to make. It's beyond cheap to make yourself compared to the probably $1000 I would spend if I bought one to the length I want it.

I'm going to start looking this weekend to pick up materials so I have plenty of time.

Do you have experience doing other similar sewing projects?

Just little things like sewing on a button, fixing something with a quick sew, a quick hem to my a dress or jumpsuit that I was too lazy to bring in for shortening. My latest thing is sewing straps to make them shorter when they are not adjustable. I'm pretty crafty and enjoy a good project like that.

Your wedding dress is a different kettle of fish than a quick hem or shortening straps though.

Oh for sure, but I’m up to the challenge is what I’m saying. Just curious to see if anyone else had any experience with this and what it was like, if it was worth doing etc. Again, if it turns out to be a dud, I can always leave the dress as is and buy myself the veil. My idea for the train is that I would make it separately and attach to the dress, so I won’t really be like playing around with the dress much and wouldn’t risk ruining it. If it doesn’t work out, I’d be out the $20-30 cost of materials, but I would use them for something else anyway. If it works though, I’d be saving at least the $500-$1000 cost of the veil so I feel like it’s worth a shot!

That makes more sense - I thought you were going to sew *onto* your dress! I know there are people making their dresses and adding things, but you'd have to look through previous discussion threads to find them.
