Dizzy Dancing

Laura, on October 22, 2008 at 1:02 PM Posted in Community Conversations 1 5

My FH and I have been taking dance lessons to create a dramatic, choreographed first dance. The moves are so exciting and we've actually been doing a great job with it all, I think it will look amazing. My problem is that more than half the time we practice I get so dizzy that I am unbearably sick to my stomach for many HOURS afterward! Obviously I don't want to be sick the rest of the night at my wedding after our first dance. There have been a couple times I have managed to not get dizzy at all and I don't know what I did differently those times. I know all about "spotting" but I really can't master it. Any advice? Would taking motion sickness pills help with this at all? I know it should get better with practice but it's so hard to even practice when I can't do it more than 10 minutes and even then i pay for the whole day!

I've had a lot of my brides get dizzy and sick during dance rehearsal and quite frankly I don't think any move that makes the bride sick is worth it. So what I've done is, if the bride wasn't able to master the spotting like you've tried, I've simply taken all the spins and dips or anything that was making her sick out and replaced them with upright straight forward or back moves. There are so many steps that can be done that can make for a beautiful first dance, the combinations are endless. If you're still set on the exciting first dance that it sounds like you have down pretty well, then you'll have to suffer through the side effects. You could try a motion sickness pill before a rehearsal and see if that helps although I've just found they make me sleepy and who wants to sleep through the most important day of their life??!!

Good luck and I hope it works out!

They also have motion sickness patches. I would definately try something for motion sickness at one of your rehearsals. You poor thing. I would not have wanted to be sick all night at my wedding either. I hope you find a cure for this or maybe with more than 6 months to go you might get used to everything & not get dizzy anymore. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

I was gonna say that dramamine can and mostly likely will cause drowsiness and you definately don't want that.

I've taken Bonine before going on an 8 hour cruise into the ocean with lots of snorkeling. The Bonine is the same as dramamine only it is not supposed to make you as drowsy. Well the waves were insanely high that day so the boat was rocking like mad. Not only did I not get queasy for one minute, but I wasn't at all drowsy or tired even with all the activity. So I do have good experiences with motion sickness pills, I just wasn't sure if it would work the same for spinning sickness as it does for boat motion sickness. I have also heard that natural ginger pills can work too. I will give them a try before our next dance practice and let you know how it works out. We are barely evening doing many spins..it only takes 2 to make me wanna toss my cookies! Thanks!

Spotting is the best way to keep from getting dizzy, however you can choose a focal point...say your FH's eyes when you are doing close spins...also try closing your eyes...(That's what ice skaters do!)

I've been dancing forever.... try the spotting...it will work Smiley smile

Try it around the house...stare at a spot as long as you can, while spinning, and then whip your head around as quick as you can to find it again.

Then grab the Tylenol for the whiplash...ha ha!

If it doesn't work, go easy on the spins...your guests will be so impressed that you're not rocking back and forth they won't no the difference.

I'm sure you will both do great!!!
