Dj "Do not Play" list

Sylphier, on March 17, 2017 at 10:14 AM Posted in Planning 0 61

Okay so it was suggested to me to make a list of do not play songs to give to my dj, to keep guests from trying to get something like the chicken dance on that will just drive me crazy. Anyone else doing this? If you are, what songs did you list? I know my guest list pretty well and I definitely have some trouble makers that will pick the songs they know i hate just to see the annoyed look on my face, so I'm trying to bite that bullet early and seeing what others are putting on their lists I think would help me a lot to complete mine! Even if you aren't doing a list, what songs would you put on it if you were?

The only song I hate enough to put on there was Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke. Our DJ played some line dances/slides/shuffles but our crowd liked them. Not the chicken dance though, haha.

Oh, we're totally doing a list- on it will be the electric slide, the chicken dance, anything by nsync, backstreet boys, or britaney spears (FH puts them on just to annoy me, but i hated them in the 90s and there is no nostalgia factor for me). THe other thing we're doing is putting a line for guests to request a song on the RSVP- that way everyone can request a song then, we can filter them, and we probably won't have the dj take requests day of.

The only song we have on ours is the first dance song from FH's first wedding. I really don't care much about what the DJ plays if people are enjoying it. Also, our DJ asked us for this list during the consultation, so most should be prepared for it!

@Holly Oh I hate blurred lines too that's a good one. I don't much mind the shuffles or line dances either but I know for a fact my sister will try to play chicken dance and then pester me to do it so she can record it lol that's why it was first on my list!

@FutureMrsAllen oh that's a good list! I don't mind the cliche old songs but ugh cotton eyed Joe and cupid shuffle are terrible. Definitely adding to my list. Thanks!

Hahaha, @Holly, I HATE that Robin Thicke song too, with a passion. I've always thought I would put any "line/group" dances on the do not play list because I absolutely hate them, but people on here all the time post that the crowd usually likes them, so I don't know...

@FutureMrsE I can't stand Beyonce either so Im with you on that lol. Oh I didn't even think of ymca! Adding that too.

@Susan Oh man I love 90s music but I can see where you are coming from, that would drive me nuts if my FH did that to me. We didn't do a request line on the rsvp, I thought about it but it was one more thing I would have to track that I didn't really need so I opted not to haha.

@Sara I put no beiber on mine too lol. Tempted to put no Taylor swift also but not sure yet.

@Ang I know my crowd is gonna want and enjoy the group dance stuff, and I have been told the same, that usually they're things most crowds want. Trying really hard not to take them all away haha

Keeping it to a short list: chicken dance n any Johnny Cash songs (reminds me of ex) n only 1 play of Happy Birthday, if it's requested (we are getting married on our shared birthday but it's a wedding; not a birthday party : )

@Katie my crowd is much more that loud drunken goofy type so even though I personally don't much like dancing I'm expecting a lot of it at my reception.

@catlady oh man I didn't think of Bruno Mars, I can't stand him! My aunt will definitely be expecting Pharrell though, he's her favorite!

@MrsCoakleyToBe I'm iffy about country because some is really good but some I find awful so I can totally see not wanting it! It's not very dance friendly music anyway

@FutureMrsAllen is my hero for including Don't Stop Believing. We will be straight out banning that, Shout, Cupid Shuffle, Chicken Dance, and any 80s songs that cause drunk people to scream at the top of their lungs (Living on a Prayer, etc.) ETA: We will also be greatly limiting slow songs. High energy all night!

@ambrok oh wow birthday and wedding all in one! Good idea limiting the birthday song then for sure!

@FMW I've been asking FH for his list of do not play songs for two months and haven't gotten even one so at this point I gave up and decided to make the whole thing myself.

So many songs I didn't think to add in all your lists, you guys are so helpful!

I told my dj no line dances unless someone requests them. Hopefully no one will! I heard the hokey pokey at a wedding once so that's also off limits, ugh.

We printed out the list of top 100 wedding songs and crossed out ones that were no. Some songs you don't think of until it's playing. Also helps the DJ get a feel for songs you like and hate.

@mrsfallbride as much as I might like to do that I think the party will be much more fun if I let my guests request, I'm not big on dancing so they'll have better suggestions than I do.

@kay I've never heard of that song

@kia9 lol my sister is in love with Jon bonjovi so I don't have the heart to ban his music but you mentioning 80s songs reminded me my mother loves to sing love shack and that is not something I need at my reception. Lol. Gonna have to put that on the list.
