DJ says I need to hire an emcee??

KMG, on June 9, 2015 at 7:07 AM Posted in Planning 0 40

Morning ladies! I was speaking with our DJ last night and he informed me that I need to hire an emcee for the wedding. We already have one of our friends emceeing the reception but our DJ said that we'll need to hire someone for the dancing/party part to make the announcements (I assume he's meaning cake cutting, bouquet toss etc).

Has anyone heard of this? I always assumed that the DJ himself would make the announcements once the party started. Am I wrong to think it's kinda crazy to pay another person 150$? I guess I'm just failing to see the importance of an emcee. Thanks in advance for the help!

That's his job, he's your DJ and emcee. You probably need to find and hire another DJ.

Time to ditch your DJ. Emceeing is part of the job.

Also, the emcee is an extremely important role and it must be done correctly. That person keeps things moving, informs everyone, etc. Without a good emcee it will be very disorganized, unless it's a very small reception.

That is ridiculous. It's a wedding, not Wheel of Fortune. What was he going to do? Play music and text his friends, like some of my least faves?

Have a discussion. And threaten to fire him.

Thanks everyone. I'll have to talk to him again tonight and find out if he won't do it, or would just rather not. I'll start looking at alternate DJs today in case.

I would also ask your venue if there is a coordinator that could make these announcements. It is kind of nuts that the DJ isn't providing this service.

This is ridiculous, and I'm sorry you're dealing with it.

The DJ is why I always argue against people DJing their own wedding. Because of the emcee. So, there is really no difference between this guy and a well thought out playlist on an iPod besides a nicer speaker set, really.

I agree with everyone else. Ditch this bimbo and hire someone else. Your dj is supposed to emcee.

Ummm.... If he'd "rather not" do it, how good of a job do you think he's going to do?

By not wanting to/refusing to do a very important part of the job, he seems very unprofessional. I'm assuming you're paying a professional price, you should get professional service in return.

Like others have stated, MCing is part of the DJs job. Is he charging premium pricing?

He sure is charging premium pricing! He mixes his own music and my FH fell in love with his style the first time we heard him - that being said, if he isn't providing the same service that other DJs do then that just doesn't work for me.

I would look elsewhere, it's a red flag that he doesn't want to emcee. Hopefully you haven't signed a contract or anything yet

Ok. Yes Emcee is part of SOME DJ'S jobs. Some companies have people who just DJ (usually people who haven't done a lot of weddings) and then the more experienced guys are the Emcee (Edit) Apparently he is not one of those companies. However, how hard is it to say "guys its time for the cake cutting." Also can't your friend just do that too?

Our DJ charges extra for MCing duties - MCing is more than just making an announcement or two, I feel like there is an expectation for them to be funny/make comments etc as well.

We're having the groomsmen each in charge of a specific announcement (since they're not all giving speeches). We have a DOC and she's partially "in charge" of them in terms of timing etc.

I agree with @Nicole - if your DJ isn't providing emcee services, he's basically just an expensive iPod with good speakers. The emcee duties are one of the most important parts of DJing.

Talk to your DJ, but if he isn't willing to do this job, look for someone better.

Sorry you're dealing with this. Smiley sad

Um, I have to say I disagree with @Drop the Mic - I'm also confused why someone who apparently owns a DJ company is suggesting that you just get a friend to make announcements, because it's not hard to do. ???

Getting the timing of the announcements right IS important, and a little more than just saying "guys its time for the cake cutting." If your DJ just charges a little more for emcee duties, maybe see if you can work something out. If he doesn't do it at all, I would shop around.

As a part time dj myself...its definitely his job to make announcements...otherwise you should just get speakers and an ipod.

Realistically, too, even without much experience, how hard is it to announce the bridal party, dances, etc? Its not.

    I'd look for another dj.
