Morning ladies! I was speaking with our DJ last night and he informed me that I need to hire an emcee for the wedding. We already have one of our friends emceeing the reception but our DJ said that we'll need to hire someone for the dancing/party part to make the announcements (I assume he's meaning cake cutting, bouquet toss etc).

Has anyone heard of this? I always assumed that the DJ himself would make the announcements once the party started. Am I wrong to think it's kinda crazy to pay another person 150$? I guess I'm just failing to see the importance of an emcee. Thanks in advance for the help!

Yeah, concerning as hell that a DJ is cool with this.

I hire vendors to work my wedding so that my friends and family or myself don't have to...

I definitely won't be having a friend help the DJ during the party. It's different having someone we know emcee during dinner - afterwards is for drinking and having fun!

I've got an e-mail in to my DJ for clarification on this. Fingers crossed we were just misunderstanding each other.. I'd like to keep him as our DJ for FH but I don't think it's fair to have to hire another second person for a job that the DJ could do himself!

That would be like the florist saying you need to find someone to arrange the bouquets and centerpieces. What in the fuck?? Find a new "DJ."

    ETD: spelling.

You definitely shouldn't need to hire a separate emcee! If you don't want your friend to emcee the entire thing, then your DJ can make the announcements. Hopefully you will get things cleared up soon!

There is a big difference between emceeing (I completely hate that way of writing it - but it works in this case) and a Master of Ceremonies. So perhaps you need to clarify with him. But this might be a UK/US difference so I'm not sure.

A DJ chatting on the mic to me is very different to being Master of Ceremonies (or Toast Master which is what it's sometimes called). Not every DJ is a Master of Ceremonies so perhaps he is thinking more along those lines as to why you might need to hire an additional person.

Great point Nicola - didn't think of that! I definitely only want a "DJ chatting on the mic" so hopefully that will help clear things up with him.

Yea, that guy sounds like a tool bag. That's part of his job.

This is exactly why we hired a DJ. My cousin wanted to DJ the wedding (which we were cool with) until he advised us he didn't want to do the announcing. Uhhh, no. We hired a DJ that will play the music and announce stuff.

I have run into this same problem. With our wedding being in Ghana we were told the DJ only plays music so we were told to ask someone to be the mc for the whole day. I thought this was weird but I guess what's how it's done there.

DJ's job. I'm having a friend and his iPod do the trick.

The dj we hired doesn't do the emceeing himself but an emcee is included in the price... it a part of the job. Eta: well I feel dumb.. I just talked to fh about our dj and emcee. He said that our dj does emcee. I was confused because our contract states that our dj company requires a seat for the the dj and a seat for the emcee. We know the dj and know he does the announcement. Turns out it's for his guest and that's ok with us since we know him... but still emceeing is part of the job.

I'd just look for another DJ. Emceeing is a part of his job.

Whaaaat?! Ugh I'm sorry you're dealing with that! Have a conversation, he other does it without charging you extra... It's expected of DJs. If he refuses, find yourself another DJ.

That's usually his job. That's weird. You could have a designated wedding coordinator who could round you up for that stuff but idk if he/she'd be comfortable announcing.

Edit: Guys reread the original topic post and then feel free to edit your posts about me being cool with this. "We already have one of our friends emceeing the reception" R.E.L.A.X.

Boston Kate I don't usually agree with people having friends emcee. But she is already committed to it. What I said was since she already HAD a friend doing some on the announcements why not just him do this too. Cake cutting announcements are the EASIEST. "Guys we are about to cut the cake. Who wants clean? Who wants messy?" Yadda yadda. done.

If its so easy WTF doesn't the DJ just do it? I would honestly just find another DJ, the majority of DJ's will emcee as well so why even waste time with one who won't

Allysia02 I Really don't know. Maybe he's afraid of messing up the Entrance, maybe he doesn't want to run the night. Maybe he doesn't own a microphone. I really have no idea. I can only speak for myself and my experiences.
