DJ vs. Playlist

Jenna, on July 7, 2017 at 6:07 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 6

Has anyone created their own playlist (like on Wedding DJ or other app) and just rented speakers for music at their wedding? I see where you have different playlists for ceremony, cocktail hour, and dancing. I also have read a lot on how you don't want just a shuffle list- you want a specific list so you get a good mix for everyone's tastes (and I'm willing to put the work in to make the playlists to save money). We're having a pretty laid back ceremony in a backyard. Wasn't sure if anyone was able to execute this well, or if you'd recommend spending the money and getting a DJ? I even spoke to someone who has experience In DJing (doesn't have equipment anymore) and he said he would MC & run the playlist for us. If you went the DJ route, how much did you pay?

My avatar was updated, so I'm not sure why it's not anymore... anyways, where we're having our wedding at is rather far out from any big cities so additional to renting a DJ there would more than likely be an additional expense for traveling. I just wasn't sure if anyone went the route we are leaning towards! Smiley smile

I recommend doing a dj. Shop around. You may find one that isnt super expensive.

There are people here who successfully had wedding playlists, but many of them didn't have dancing. I would suggest getting on the desktop version of the site and doing a search because I know this topic has come up before. If you want dancing and a party atmosphere, I would highly recommend a DJ.

I'd go pro and hire a dj. The DJ can also M/C for you and the guests on the dance floor.

Honestly, I would love to do that. I'm a music teacher so I'm being super picky with the DJ and I refuse to spend upwards of $2,000 when I have experience and know what their job entails. It's insane and sickening what they charge. I am going to have to settle and find someone though because I've had so many people complain when I mentioned the idea of making my own playlist. What you could consider doing is reaching out to various colleges and universities that offer music programs in your area and see if there are any students that have the equipment and are looking for experience. It's an option if you're looking to save because when I was in college, I had friends who did that and only charged $400 for the whole wedding which was far more reasonable than what the "professionals" charge.

    I'd go with a DJ.
