DJs & Cocktail Hour

Allie, on September 14, 2015 at 12:47 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

Hi Ladies!

Finally getting somewhere with this wedding planning madness! DJ, Venue, and Videographer all booked, colors picked, flower inspiration pinned, and we have a meeting with the people who I THINK (fingers crossed!) will be our photographers on Wednesday. So excited!

Quick question for you guys - our cocktail hour and reception are in two very separated spaces at the same venue (typical I think). Do you normally see (or have you chosen to have) a DJ play the music for the cocktail hour, or would you use the overhead stereo system for cocktail hour music? I know people will be ordering drinks and mingling and I'm just not sure how to keep them entertained during that hour.

Thanks so much for any tips! Happy planning! Smiley smile -A

My DJ will play quieter love songs, and some fun love songs. I think you need music. Even just the overhead stereo system on low would work.

Thanks @Kathryn! One more question - does the DJ normally play the music for the ceremony as well, or would the overhead system be used for that? I'm assuming that if the Dj has to keep moving and re-setting up, there is going to be additional fees and none of that was mentioned when we spoke.

Really wish I would have thought about this before lol.

Most of the weddings I do with a DJ either have them doing all three things or acoustic/classical music for the ceremony and cocktail hour.

Please note the discussions going on about mic's for officiants and guest readers and vows; this should definitely be a part of your DJ discussion.

The DJ I met with offered to do ceremony, cocktail hour, and the reception all as part of his package. That included all the wireless mics for speeches, etc. I think you just need to ask the DJ if that is what he usually does and ask what equipment he provides.

Our DJ is doing all 3.. Ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception. If your cocktail hour and reception is too far for the DJ, then I don't see why you couldn't just use the overhead system. Is your DJ familiar with your venue? You should really ask him what the sound system setup is capable of.

Our venue plays a pre selected Pandora station on their stereo system for cocktail hour. The DJ will be in the other room getting set up for the reception.

Our DJ is setting up in two places (garden for the ceremony and atrium for the reception/cocktail hour) to make sure there's music for everything with no lag. He said sometimes he'll even set up three spots the day before if the cocktail hour is in a different area. Of course it's worth asking, but I'm sure your DJ has a plan to handle any sort of timeline Smiley smile

If you plan on having quiet instrumental music or like Sinatra type music you should be fine with the speaker system. It just depends on the type of sound system the venue has. A lot of times yeah they have a system but its not made to play music, its made for speeches and such. And you never know what shape they are in. I went to a sweet 16 where they had a system but the speakers were blown so all they did was make annoying noise. Usually a DJ can do 2 set ups and just move from one to the other.
