Do i Need a New Photographer?

Alex, on August 5, 2022 at 5:34 PM Posted in Planning 0 7
Our photographer came highly recommended by our venue, and offered a great package within our budget, woohoo! However, it’s been 7 weeks since our engagement pictures and I still don’t have our photos! I emailed the photographer after about 4 weeks, asking when we could expect to get our pictures because we are waiting on them to send out save the dates. I was given a generic “we’ve been busy but we’ll be working on yours next” response. Another 3 weeks have gone by and still nothing.

If it’s taking 7+ weeks to get engagement pics back, Im worried what the turn around time will be on wedding photos. I also didn’t leave our engagement shoot excited about our pics…. Our photographer only did engagement pics at a very specific time during the week, he arrived about 15 mins late but still left at our “end” time, and it seemed like we did the same 3 poses over and over. I’m anxious to see these pics because I’m worried I won’t like them!
I’m prepared to reach out to the photographer for a second time on Monday. Any suggestions on how to be direct with my concern/frustration but not sound like a bridezilla? At what point should I start looking for another photographer?

It might be reasonable timing. I’d reach back out and ask what’s an estimate date. I know for our wedding photos they told us we can expect
to receive them 90 days after the wedding.

I would wait a bit. I understand wanting to use them for save the dates but you might not be able to. Our photographer at least gave us a couple of preview shots a week after our shoot with him for engagement pictures but said we wouldn’t get them all for a month. As far as wedding goes a lot of photographers tend to give preview shots pretty quickly after but generally don’t give the full amount of photos for 8-12 weeks. Ours has a 10 week timeline. If this person is highly recommended by the venue then they are probably busy with weddings and those photos (it is wedding season after all) as well as engagement shoots and whatever else. Plus they get days off just like us! I know it’s hard to wait but I’m sure they’re doing their best

Defiantly ask them for a deadline when you talk to them on Monday as well as the expected turn around for you wedding photos. Ik it takes forever to get them in and you will have to time it just right.

You can reach out to them again, but quality photos do take some time. I’ve had professional photos taken before and it took a few months

Photographer here- this is actually a normal amount of time to wait, and not extreme yet. It can take months after the wedding to get photos back, depending how many photos were taken that need to be retouched, etc. However it’s odd that they didn’t set expectations with you upfront for how long it would take.

These are just our engagement photos. How long is your typical turn around time for engagement pictures? I know summer is a busy season and it may take a little longer than usual, but 7+ weeks for 30 mins worth of pictures seem long to me (but maybe I’m totally wrong, please tell me if I am!)

You’re right that usually wedding photos take much longer than engagement photos. It usually takes around 4 weeks from my experience for a smaller shoot, but that can change based on time of year and how crazy your schedule is…. Did he give you any sense at all in the beginning for how long it would take? Did you sign anything or does he have a website that gives any of these kinds of details? I’d say you’re starting to get to the point that it’s taking longer than usual, but don’t panic just yet. If you don’t get anything in another 2 weeks, then it might be time to start looking for someone else.
