Do I need "props" for my engagement session?

GrayCatVintage, on October 11, 2014 at 3:19 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 15

I plan on e-mailing my photographer tomorrow to make sure we are still on for our engagement session a week from Sunday. I plan on using some of these pictures to make save the date cards. My question is, do I need props? I thought I *might* have time to cut three wood rounds from a log in the yard and use paint or a wood burner to etch in 10/10/15 for our date. Is this silly? I just think I should have something but maybe not. Thoughts?

Ask the photographer-mine preferred not to have too many props, although I insisted on a tiny pumpkin for ring shots. Smiley smile She brought blankets for different ground shots and one for us to snuggle up in as well as a chalkboard sign for our wedding date to be written on.

Not silly in my opinion. If you're trying to use something original or specific to your wedding (theme maybe?), you'd probably be safe bringing your own props. We had our session Thursday; the photographer already had 'save the date' signs , 'she said yes' signs and so on. I wish I would have brought a sign with our date on it; made with our colors.

We brought a few props for our photos. We had an "&" sign, a pumpkin with an "s" on it, a save the date banner, and a wood "s". Its up to you but our photographer liked we had different props. Oh we also had a picnic basket as well. If something is meaningful to you then I would use it.

I'm not a huge fan of props in pictures, because a good photographer will be able to take awesome photographs that don't need to be jazzed up by props, but that's just me. That being said, I'm not anti-props at all. If it is something that is meaningful to you or representative of your relationship, you should definitely try to incorporate it.

I don't think your idea is silly at all. However, if you are having your prop be your wedding date for your STDs, I don't think you will need to add much to the STD fluff it up. If you have been looking online and have a few ideas for which STD style you'd like to have from a particular website make sure your props will go well with it and won't clash. If in doubt, take some with and some without your props and then you can toy with it once you get your pics back.

Bring em! Youll have plenty of shots to chose from. I got a few balloons for mine. When only used them for a few of the shots.

We used some (my antique camera, FH's tom baker scarf and sonic screwdriver). I would just make sure you do plenty without them too

We brought an ampersand to hold. We ended up not using those pics for anything, though, we thought they looked silly. But I've seen a few that worked out. I just wouldn't rush to have something if you don't really want/care about them.

We planned on using our engagement photos for the save the dates. I made a cute wooden sign with our date on it. We mentioned to our photographer that we love having picnics together and I had this cute picnic basket that we used with a blanket, wine glasses and wine. The picnic ones came out super cute but I didn't care for the sign ones. We also had our dog in some, and he had this adorable bow tie on. That's the one we used for our save the dates!

I think props for the sake of props are silly. If you have something meaningful that you'd like to include in your engagement pictures, though, then go for it. We didn't use any, we just chose picturesque locations to take our photos at.

I would totally bring props if you wanted! I've seen some really cute prop pics but like stated above a good photographer will make your pics look amazing no matter what.

We did our antique car because it's a staple to our wedding as well as two picture frames one said he asked, she said yes. We each held one up. We are not huge prop ppl, but it's up to you! We had to have our car cause it's out thing (car shows every weekend- just came home from one lol) find something that represents you and maybe do some pics with them and some without

Props just because? No. The cars make sense; I am so over empty picture frames I could cry.

Why don't you ask your photographer?

I sent an e-mail to the photographer this evening to ask her if she has any suggestions or if she needs us to bring anything. The way I see it, the photographer is the artist and they know what to do lol. I am not going to give her a "must have shot" list or anything like that. FH and I are going to be in hiking clothing because that is normal for us - but I know that is not going to look very "weddingy" haha. This was why I thought we might need some kind of a prop.

Bring something if it's meaningful! Hubs and I met cycling, and our engagement pics with bikes were pretty fantastic! You can always nix whatever you bring if your photographer doesn't think it'll work.
