Do i need to hair hair stylist for a down do?

on September 15, 2020 at 3:45 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 11

Hi, brides who are doing long curly hair for the wedding day, are you or did you hire a hair stylist for that ? I’m being quoted for $200++ for that, don’t know if I should just skip it 😆

I did a half up and half down do and went to my local salon for it.

initially though i was considering doing my own hair if i could aha but i tried it and it did not go well but for you, if you do some on yourself and you like it then go for it!

I’m just doing loose curls for my wedding, so I decided to just do it myself. I’ve done it a million times, I know my hair and how to get the curls to stay, and it only takes me about 20 minutes to do- I just couldn’t imagine spending hundreds of dollars for someone to do some thing I can do myself. Now, if I were going to do some intricate up do, I would definitely hire a professional.

I wanted different waves than my usual so I hired someone. The other thing you have to keep in mind is whether you will feel comfortable doing it yourself (it's harder under stress!) and whether it will last all day! But if you have practiced and set aside enough time for it then go for it!

I did a trials with hair and makeup and it cost me $200( tip instead) which was just a basically half up and half down hair, and a makeup I wasn’t really happy with ( which makeup only cost $50), I'm thinking maybe just do a loose curls myself and save the money for a better makeup artist.

I am thinking just go with a loose curls myself. Otherwise the hair and makeup artists will cost around $400, I feel like maybe save the money from hair ( since it’s kinda basic styling) and get a better makeup artist.

It totally depends on how comfortable you are doing your own hair. If you are capable of styling your own hair the way you want it for your wedding, it consistently comes out the way you like, and the style lasts all day, then there is no reason to pay anyone else to do it unless you want to feel pampered and have one less thing you need to do on your own that day.

For a down do of curls, that's easily something I could do myself but it ends up looking a little bit different each time. $200+ seems like an AWFUL lot for a blow-out and curling though. Do you have a LOT of hair, or really thick and long hair? Do you live in a very expensive area? Where I live is moderate cost and my salon is about $70-100 for special events styling.

We live in Kentucky which shouldn’t be too bad ( I thought lol) . I think because of covid, vendors are charging extras to cover their expenses. Some salon quoted me $700 for bride’s hair and makeup, including trials, without tips Lol😱😱😱
The salon I went to, will probably charge $150 for the day of hair (just me) and $100 on site fee, and plus tips will probably be more than $200😭

$150 still sounds like a lot, but maybe not completely insane. Usually updos are more expensive than just a curl or blow-dry, so that seems steep if you want your hair curled only. The vendors I looked at all had on-site minimums - they usually wouldn't come to your venue unless you had 4-5 girls to style, but there was no fee within a certain radius of the salon.

I'd keep searching around, but if you don't find someone you like at your price point and you or someone you know can do your hair, go for it. For our ceremony, I ended up doing my own makeup (because I couldn't have it done because of Covid) and a new stylist who I'd never worked with before (and still doesn't actually know what my face looks like) did my hair. I paid more than I expected to and didn't love my hair style (didn't hate it, didn't LOVE it), but primarily went because I wanted one less thing to worry about on the day. Because we had our wedding during Covid lockdowns and were hosting people in our small home, just getting out of the house and being pampered for an hour was almost worth it in itself. Good luck!

I did half up and half down and I'm SO happy I hired someone. I didn't want the stress at all and when I curl my hair, it doesn't stay all day. Plus I needed some pinned back & some teasing around my crown.

I am doing an updo and am doing my hair and makeup myself. I was quoted nearly $1000 for just me and I can’t justify that cost (for myself). I’m confident my makeup will be flawless (I’ve been practicing daily / weekly). I’m a little more concerned with my hair but still not enough to justify the price quoted. I try a new hairstyle every couple of days and will pluck my favorite here in the next week or so

I’m personally having a stylist do it because I suck at doing my own hair, I never style it. I also have really fine hair that never wants to hold curls or style, so I feel a lot more comfortable with a professional handling it. I think if you regularly do your hair and you’re confident in doing it, then skip out. But if you have any doubts on your abilities it’s worth the extra money in my opinion so that you aren’t freaking out right before your wedding if your hair isn’t turning out!
