Do It Yourself Cake Topper

Kathryne, on June 3, 2016 at 11:24 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 13

I'm a DIYer and I've been doing a lot of stuff on my own, but my cake topper is becoming a bit of a struggle for me.. I saw this really pretty acrylic cake topper that says "love you more" and decided to do my own, but I've gone from thinking I want to cut it out of plywood with a scroll saw, to make it out of gum paste or chocolate. Now I'm thinking since I have flag banners going across all my tables ("love is sweet" for the dessert table, "mr & mrs" for the head table etc.) that I should do something like that for my cake topper also. Thoughts from fellow DIYers or even people who have done their own cake toppers?

It would be super easy if you had a Cricut to do the first one. The cricut cuts all sorts of materials including thin wood.

Okay so I am not a huge DIYer but I love crafts and my mom is an artist so I have a bit of craftiness in my blood. I was wanting something like your top pic but then I waited to long to order is so I thought that's okay, the flowers on my cake will be enough, I don't need a topper. But now you have me thinking I could make something similar to the bottom one. Where do you get all your DIY supplies or supplies for projects like this? I was thinking Hobby Lobby.

I made my own cake. I would pick one idea or the other, both will be too cluttered. Your original idea is much more elegant, but the second one is more fun and would be easier to make.

I personally would find using a scroll saw for the first idea challenging. Why do you want to cover it in gumpaste/fondant? Do you mean you want to cover the food with gumpaste/fondant or just so you can use the wood as a template? I don't know for sure but I do not think I would try to make this out of gumpaste/fondant. I would leave it as wood and paint it with something food safe.

I feel like everyone has been doing the cut plywood text lately. I like the mini pennant banner since you are doing it in other places as well.

I had two donut towers, and this one I made the topper for. The other one I purchased (chalkboard).

eta - cricuts are legit. You should try that route.

Future Mrs Collins I go to hobby lobby, michaels, wal mart, even the dollar store! Just depends on my location and my budget. Lady Monk I was thinking wood or gum paste. The issue with that is I haven't worked with gum paste much so even though it was a thought I probably will not go that route. Stacy K thanks for your input! I like that you point out that everyone has been doing that first option because my thing is I want to be unique. Plus if I'm doing it everywhere else, I should go with the flags and with everything I'm DIYing it would be so much easier and less stress.

Love the flags, also love the saying of the other...it's what FH and I say to each other and it's also engraved on our rings.
